अनुत्तरोपपातिकदशा एक बार भगवान् महावीर राजगृह के गुणशिलक उद्यान में पधारे । मेघकुमार ने भी उपदेश सुना । माता-पिता से अनुमति लेकर भगवान् के पास दीक्षा ग्रहण की।
जिस दिन दीक्षा ग्रहण की उसी रात को मुनियों के यातायात से, पैरों की रज और ठोकर लगने से मेघमुनि व्याकुल हो गए।
भगवान् ने उन्हें पूर्वभवों का स्मरण कराते हुए संयम में धृति रखने का उपदेश दिया, जिससे मेघमुनि संयम में स्थिर हो गए। एक मास की संलेखना की। सर्वार्थसिद्ध विमान में देवरूप से उत्पन्न हुए। महाविदेहवास से सिद्ध होंगे।

स्कन्दक संन्यासी श्रावस्ती नगरी के रहने वाले गद्दभालि परिव्राजक के शिष्य और गौतम स्वामी के पूर्व मित्र थे। भगवान् महावीर के शिष्य पिंगलक निर्ग्रन्थ के प्रश्नों का उत्तर नहीं दे सके; फलतः श्रावस्ती के लोगों से जब सुना कि भगवान् महावीर यहाँ पधारे हैं तो उनके पास जा पहुँचे। समाधान मिलने पर वह भगवान् के शिष्य हो गए।
स्कन्दक मुनि ने स्थविरों के पास रहकर ११ अंगों का अध्ययन किया। भिक्षु की १२ प्रतिमाओं की क्रम से साधना की. आराधना की। गणरत्नसंवत्सर तप किया। शरीर दर्बल.क्षीण और अशक्त हो गया। अन्त में राजगह के समीप विपलगिरि पर जाकर एक मास की संलेखना की। काल करके १२वें देवलोक में गए। महाविदेहवास से सिद्ध होंगे। स्कन्दक मुनि की दीक्षा पर्याय १२ वर्ष की थी।

आपका मूल नाम इन्द्रभूति है, परन्तु गोत्रतः गौतम नाम से आबाल-वृद्ध प्रसिद्ध हैं।
गौतम, भगवान महावीर के सबसे बड़े शिष्य थे। भगवान् के पास धर्म-शासन के यह कुशल शास्ता थे, प्रथम गणधर थे।
मगध देश के गोवर ग्राम के रहने वाले, गौतम गोत्रीय ब्राह्मण वसुभूति के यह ज्येष्ठ पुत्र थे। इनकी माता का नाम पृथिवी था।
इन्द्रभूति वैदिक धर्म के प्रखर विद्वान् थे, गंभीर विचारक थे, महान् तत्त्ववेत्ता थे।
एक बार इन्द्रभूति आर्य सोमिल के निमन्त्रण पर पावापुरी में होने वाले यज्ञोत्सव में गए थे। उसी अवसर पर भगवान् महावीर भी पावापुरी के बाहर महासेन उद्यान में पधारे हुए थे। भगवान् की महिमा को देखकर इन्द्रभूति उन्हें पराजित करने की भावना से भगवान् के समवसरण में आये। किन्तु वे स्वयं ही पराजित हो गए। अपने मन का संशय दूर हो जाने पर वे अपने पांच-सौ शिष्यों सहित भगवान् के शिष्य हो गए। गौतम प्रथम गणधर हुये।
आगमों में और आगमोत्तर साहित्य में गौतम के जीवन के सम्बन्ध में बहुत कुछ लिखा मिलता है।
इन्द्रभूति गौतम दीक्षा के समय ५० वर्ष के थे। ३० वर्ष साधु पर्याय में और १२ वर्ष केवली पर्याय में रहे। अपने निर्वाण के समय अपना गण सुधर्मा को सौंपकर गुणशिलक चैत्य में मासिक अनशन करके भगवान् के निर्वाण से १२ वर्ष बाद ९२ वर्ष की अवस्था में निर्वाण को प्राप्त हुए।
