४ - तेणं कालेणं तेणं समएणं बारवईए नयरीए, जहा पढमे, नवरं वसुदेवे राया । धारिणी देवी । सीहो सुमिणे | सारणे कुमारे। पण्णासओ दाओ । चउद्दस पुव्वा । वीसं वासा परियाओ । सेसं जहा गोयमस्स जाव' सेत्तुंजे सिद्धे ।
उस काल तथा उस समय में द्वारका नगरी थी । उसमें वसुदेव राजा थे। उसकी रानी धारिणी थी। उसने गर्भाधान के पश्चात् स्वप्न में सिंह देखा । समय आने पर बालक को जन्म दिया और उसका नाम सारणकुमार रखा गया। उसे विवाह में पचास-पचास वस्तुओं का दहेज मिला। सारणकुमार ने सामायिक से लेकर १४ पूर्वी का अध्ययन किया। बीस वर्ष तक दीक्षा पर्याय का पालन किया। शेष सब वृत्तान्त गौतम की तरह है । शत्रुंजय पर्वत पर एक मास की संलेखना करके यावत् सिद्ध हुए ।
