मुद्गरपाणि यक्ष की वह उपासना करता था। राजगृह नगर की ललिता गोष्ठी के छह सदस्यों के द्वारा बन्धुमती के चरित्र को भ्रष्ट करने से अर्जुन माली के मन में अत्यन्त रोष पैदा हुआ और मुद्गरपाणि यक्ष के सहयोग से उसने उनका वध कर दिया। वह हिंसा का नग्न ताण्डव करने लगा ! प्रतिदिन सात व्यक्तियों को मारता । भगवान् महावीर के आगमन को श्रवण कर सुदर्शन श्रेष्ठी दर्शनार्थ जाता है। अर्जुन को यक्ष-पाश से मुक्त करता है और भगवान् के चरणों में पहुँचात है ।
राजगृह के बाहर यक्षाविष्ट अर्जुन माली का आतंक था। क्या मजाल कि कोई नगर से बाहर निकलने की हिम्मत करे ! मगर भ. महावीर का पदार्पण होने पर सुदर्शन, माता-पिता के मना करने पर भी रुकता नहीं। वह भगवान् के दर्शनार्थ रवाना होता है। मार्ग में अर्जुन का साक्षात्कार होता है। हिंसा पर अहिंसा की विजय होती है।
इस वर्णन में यह भी प्रतिपादित किया है कि नामधारी अनेक भक्त हो सकते हैं किन्तु सच्चे भक्त बहुत ही दुर्लभ हैं। जिस समय आकाश में उमड़-घुमड़ कर घटायें आयें, उन घटाओं को देख कर कोई मोर से कहेतू कुहूक मत, केकारव मत कर ! मोर कहेगा, यह कभी संभव नहीं है। जो सच्चा भक्त है, वह समय आने पर प्राणों की बाजी भी लगा देता है किन्तु पीछे नहीं हटता। वह जानता है, बिना अग्नि स्नान किये सुवर्ण में निखार नहीं आता। बिना घिसे हीरे में चमक नहीं आती! वैसे ही बिना कष्ट पाये भक्ति के रंग में भी चमक-दमक नहीं आती।
अर्जुन माली श्रमण बनकर उग्र साधना करते हैं। जिस के नाम से एक दिन बड़े-बड़े वीरों के पांव थ थे, हृदय धड़कते थे, जिसने पांच माह तेरह दिन में ११४१ मानवों की हत्या की थी, वही व्यक्ति जब निर्ग्रन्थ साधना को स्वीकार करता है, तो उसका जीवन आमूल-चूल परिवर्तित हो जाता है। लोग उन श्रमण का कटुवचन कहकर तिरस्कार करते हैं। लाठी, पत्थर, ईंट और थप्पड़ों से उन्हें प्रताड़ित करते हैं तथापि उन के मन में आक्रोश पैदा नहीं होता! वह यही चिन्तन करते हैं

श्रमण संयत और दान्त होता है, वह इन्द्रियों का दमन करता है। यदि कोई उसे मारता और पीटता है तो भी वह चिन्तन करता है कि यह आत्मा कभी भी नष्ट होने वाला नहीं है, यह अजर अमर है, शरीर क्षणभंगुर है। उसका नाश होता है, तो उसमें मेरा क्या जाता है! इस प्रकार समत्वपूर्वक चिन्तन करते हुए वे भयंकर उपसर्गों को भी शान्त भाव से सहन करते हैं। अर्जुन अपनी क्षमामयी उग्र साधना के द्वारा छह माह में ही मोक्ष प्राप्त कर लेते
