तब अतिमुक्त कुमार से माता-पिता इस प्रकार बोले - 'पुत्र ! तुम जिसको जानते हो उसको नहीं जानते और जिसको नहीं जानते उसको जानते हो, यह कैसे ?"
तब अतिमुक्त कुमार ने माता-पिता से इस प्रकार कहा- -'माता-पिता ! मैं जानता हूं कि जो जन्मा है उसको अवश्य मरना होगा, पर यह नहीं जानता कि कब, कहां, किस प्रकार और कितने दिन बाद मरना होगा? फिर मैं यह भी नहीं जानता कि जीव किन कर्मों के कारण नरक, तिर्यच, मनुष्य और देव-योनि में उत्पन्न होते हैं, पर इतना जनता हूं कि जीव अपने ही कर्मों के कारण नरक यावत् देवयोनि में उत्पन्न होते हैं । इस प्रकार निश्चय ही हे माता-पिता ! मैं जिसको जानता हूं उसी को नहीं जानता और जिसको नहीं जाता उसी को जानता हूं । अतः हे माता-पिता ! मैं आपकी आज्ञा पाकर यावत् प्रव्रज्या अंगीकार करना चाहता हूं।'
अतिमुक्त कुमार के माता-पिता जब बहुत-सी युक्ति-प्रयुक्तियों से समझाने में समर्थ नहीं हुए तो बोले- हे पुत्र ! हम एक दिन के लिए तुम्हारी राज्यलक्ष्मी की शोभा देखना चाहते हैं । तब अतिमुक्त कुमार माता-पिता के वचन का अनुवर्तन करके मौन रहे । तब महाबल के समान उनका राज्याभिषेक हुआ फिर भगवान् के पास दीक्षा लेकर सामायिक से लेकर ग्यारह अंगों का अध्ययन किया। बहुत वर्षों तक श्रमण चारित्र का पालन किया । गुणरत्नसंवत्सर तप का आराधन किया । यावत् विपुलाचल पर्वत पर सिद्ध हुए । विवेचन- प्रस्तुत सूत्र में राजकुमार अतिमुक्त कुमार तथा उनके माता-पिता के मध्य में हुए प्रश्नोत्तरों का सुंदर विवरण प्राप्त होता है। अतिमुक्त कुमार ने जब अपने माता-पिता से एक ही विषय को जानने और न जानने की बात कही तो माता-पिता आश्चर्यचकित हो गये। इसी कारण माता-पिता ने अपने पुत्र को उसका स्पष्टीकरण करने को कहा । तब उसने अपने माता-पिता के सम्मुख दो बाते रखीं
1.
मैं जिसे जानता हूं, उसे नहीं जानता हूं ।
2. जिसे नहीं जानता हूं, उसे जानता हूं ।
राजकुमार अतिमुक्त की ये बातें सुनकर माता-पिता को बड़ा आश्चर्य हुआ। वे सोचने लगे- 'जिसे जान लिया गया है, उसे न जानने का क्या मतलब? और जिसे नहीं जाना, उसे जानने का क्या अर्थ ? जब ज्ञान अज्ञान और अज्ञान ज्ञान नहीं कहलाता तो अतिमुक्त कुमार के ऐसा कहने का क्या प्रयोजन हो सकता है ? अन्त में उन्होंने अतिमुक्त कुमार से कहा - 'पुत्र ! अपने वक्तव्य को कुछ स्पष्ट करो। तुम्हारी यह प्रहेलिका हमारी समझ में नहीं आई ।
अतिमुक्त कुमार ने अपनी बात स्पष्ट करते हुआ कहा कि धर्म के सम्बन्ध में मैं सर्वथा अनभिज्ञ हूं, ऐसी बात नहीं है। धर्म की पूर्ण परिभाषा मैं नहीं जानता तथापि कुछ न कुछ जानता अवश्य हूं। मुझे नन्हा बालक समझकर ऐसा न मान लें कि धर्म तत्त्व से मैं सर्वथा अपरिचित हूं। मुझे इस बात का बोध है कि जो पैदा हुआ है, उसे एक दिन मरना है, जन्म के साथ मृत्यु का अनादि कालीन सम्बन्ध है । जन्म लेने वाले को एक दिन मृत्यु का ग्रास बनना ही पड़ता है। यह मैं जानता हूँ, पर मुझे यह नहीं पता कि कब ? कहाँ और कैसे? कितने समय के अनन्तर मृत्यु का प्रहार सहन करना पड़ेगा? मैं यह नहीं समझता कि जीव किन कर्मबन्ध के कारणों से चारों गतियों में जन्म लेते हैं, परन्तु मैं यह अवश्य जानता हूं कि अपने किए हुए कर्मों के कारण ही जीव नरकादि गतियों में उत्पन्न होते हैं ।
अतिमुक्त कुमार के प्रस्तुत 'कथानक में अल्पज्ञ और सर्वज्ञ का स्पष्ट अन्तर परिलक्षित होता है ।

Then I also do not know why the soul is born in hell, animal, human, and divine realms due to what karmas, but I know that the soul is born in hell and up to the divine realms due to its own karmas. Thus, certainly, O parents! I do not know what I know, and I know what I do not know. Therefore, O parents! I wish to accept the renunciation with your permission."
When the parents of the liberated prince were unable to convince him with many strategies and tactics, they said: "O son! We want to see the splendor of your kingdom for one day." Then the liberated prince remained silent, following the words of his parents. Then his coronation took place like that of Mahabal, and then he received initiation from the Lord and studied the eleven angas from Samayik. He followed the conduct of a Shraman for many years. He practiced the austerities of Gunaratnasamvatsar. He attained Siddhi on the Vipulachal mountain.
