परम उपकारी परमात्मा महावीर को शत-शत वन्दन। जिनके पावन स्मरणमात्र से साधक आत्मा के कोटि कोटि जन्म के बन्धन टूट गये, जो अनेकों साधक आत्माओं के संसार का अन्त कर अनन्त सिद्धात्माओं की परमार्थ ज्योति में ज्योतिर्मय बनाने का सफल प्रयास कर मुक्ति का अमर वरदान बन गये और साथ ही संसार के अन्य आत्माओं की सिद्धि हेतु उनकी उलझन भरी व्यथाओं को दूर कर अपूर्व गौरव गाथाओं का प्राणदान बन गये। परंपरा-प्राप्त इस अनुदान का अनुपान करवा के पावन बनानेवाला यह अंतगडदशांग सूत्र द्वादशांगी में आठवां अंग सूत्र है।

प्रस्तुत अंग का नाम 'अन्तकृत्+दशा+अंग+सूत्र है, क्योंकि प्रस्तुत ग्रन्थ में उन नव्वै महापुरुषों का जीवनवृत्त संगृहीत किया गया है जिन्होंने संयम-साधना एवं तप-साधना द्वारा आठ प्रकार के कर्मों पर विजय प्राप्त करके एवं चौरासी लाख जीव-योनियों में आवागमन से मुक्ति पाकर जीवन के अन्तिम क्षणों में मोक्षपद की प्राप्ति की। इस प्रकार जीवन-मरण के चक्र का अन्त कर देने वाले महापुरुषों के जीवनवृत्त के वर्णन को ही प्रधानता देने के कारण इस शास्त्र के नाम का प्रथम अवयव 'अन्तकृत्' है।
