First Study: Gāthāpati Ānanda
[17 - The young sun-ray-like Bodhisattva, with a lotus-like profound navel, the excellent Sāhya Soṇanda, with a golden-colored, excellent, jewel-like, shining, excellent, diamond-like waist, the excellent, tiger-like, excellent, buffalo-like, excellent, horse-like, excellent, elephant-like gait, with a well-proportioned body, with excellent, elephant-like prowess, shining with excellent, heroic movements, with the excellent, lion-like, excellent, buffalo-like, excellent, horse-like posture, immersed in the ocean-like, profound knowledge, with the excellent, elephant-like thighs, with well-formed, excellent, hidden, profound calves, with beautifully placed, excellent, delicate, graceful feet, with excellent, gradually tapering fingers, with raised, slender, reddish-brown, excellent nails, with soft, tender, lotus-petal-like soles, possessing the characteristics of eight thousand excellent men, with the excellent, auspicious, elephant-like, lion-like, buffalo-like, horse-like gait, with a distinguished appearance, shining like a blazing fire, without impurities, without hatred, without greed, free from sorrow, with a body free from defilements, devoid of love, hatred, and delusion, the expounder of the doctrine of the Arhat, the leader of the scriptures, the establisher, the ascetic, the one who has attained the state of an ascetic, possessing the thirty-four vows that are completely fulfilled, possessing the thirty-five vows that are completely fulfilled] approached.
The assembly went out like a king. In the same way, the victorious one also went out. After going out, he approached the temple where the two Palāsa trees were. After approaching, he saw the Tīrthaṅkara, the venerable Mahāvīra, near the parasol. After seeing, he placed the elephant-like jewel. After placing the elephant-like jewel, he descended from the elephant-like jewel. After descending from the elephant-like jewel, he brought the five royal insignia, namely the sword, the parasol, the fly-whisk, the armor, and the victory banner. He approached the ascetic, the venerable Mahāvīra. After approaching, he approached the ascetic, the venerable Mahāvīra, in five ways: by purifying the material substances, by not purifying the immaterial substances, by covering the upper robe, by the eye-contact with folded hands, and by focusing the mind on oneness. He thrice invoked and requested him. After invoking and requesting him thrice, he worships and pays obeisance. After worshiping and paying obeisance, he dwells in the threefold abiding, namely physical, verbal, and mental.
