First Study: Gāthāpati Ānanda
[The great city, where hundreds of people would be crushed to death if the 15th great rock were to fall, and where entry was difficult due to the absence of door openings, was surrounded by a curved rampart like a bow. It was adorned with circular crenellations on the rampart. Its royal roads, the shelters (gumatīs) built on the upper part of the citadel walls, the eight-hand-wide paths in the middle of the citadel walls, the small doors (bārīs) and gateways (gopuras) in the walls, the triumphal arches (toraṇas) at the city gates were well-organized and beautified. The bolts and door-pins of its gateways were made by skilled artisans, like sharp spearheads. Due to the markets, trading areas, and the residence of many artisans and craftsmen, it was comfortable and convenient. It was decorated and delightful with triangular spaces, crossroads, squares where more than four roads meet, shops selling utensils and various goods. Due to the constant movement of the king's procession, its royal roads were always crowded with excellent horses, intoxicated elephants, groups of chariots, palanquins with curtains, sedan chairs of human size, vehicles, and the famous two-hand-wide, long Gollas of the ancient Deccan region. There were water reservoirs adorned with blooming lotuses. It was beautified with excellent whitewashed buildings, captivating to the unblinking eyes, pleasing to the mind, delightful to behold, and enchanting to the heart.]
