श्रावस्ती में सालिहीपिता नामक एक धनाढ्य तथा प्रभावशाली गाथापति था। उसकी पत्नी का नाम फाल्गुनी था। नन्दिनीपिता की तरह सालिहीपिता की सम्पत्ति भी बारह करोड़ स्वर्ण-मुद्राओं में थी, जिसका एक भाग सुरक्षित पूंजी के रूप में रखा था तथा दो भाग बराबर-बराबर व्यापार एवं घर के वैभव-साज-सामान आदि में लगे थे।
एक बार भगवान् महावीर का श्रावस्ती में पदार्पण हुआ। श्रद्धालु जनों में उत्साह छा गया। भगवान् के दर्शन एवं उपदेश-श्रवण हेतु वे उमड़ पड़े। सालिहीपिता भी गया। भगवान् के उपदेश से उसे अध्यात्म-प्रेरणा मिली। उसने गाथापति आनन्द की तरह श्रावक-धर्म स्वीकार किया। चौदह वर्ष के बाद उसने अपने आपको अधिकाधिक धर्माराधना में जोड़ देने के लिए अपना लौकिक उत्तरदायित्व ज्येष्ठ पुत्र को सौप दिया, स्वयं उपासना में लग गया। उसने श्रावक की ११ प्रतिमाओं की यथाविधि उपासना की।
