श्रावस्ती नगरी में नन्दिनीपिता नामक एक समृद्धिशाली गाथापति था। उसकी सम्पत्ति बारह करोड़ स्वर्ण-मुद्राओं में थी, जिनका तीसरा भाग सुरक्षित पूंजी के रूप में अलग रखा हुआ था, इतना ही व्यापार में लगा था तथा उतना ही घर के वैभव-साज-सामान आदि में लगा हुआ था। उसके दस-दस हजार गायों के चार गोकुल थे। उसकी पत्नी का नाम अश्विनी था।
नन्दिनीपिता एक सम्पन्न, सुखी गृहस्थ का जीवन बिता रहा था। एक सुन्दर प्रसंग बना। भगवान् महावीर श्रावस्ती में पधारे । श्रद्धालु मानव-समुदाय दर्शन के लिए उमड़ पड़ा। नन्दिनी-पिता भी गया। भगवान् की धर्म-देशना सुनी। अन्तः प्रेरित हुआ। गाथापति आनन्द की तरह उसने भी श्रावकधर्म स्वीकार किया।
नन्दिनीपिता अपने व्रतमय जीवन को उत्तरोत्तर विकसित करता गया। यों चौदह वर्ष व्यतीत हो गए। उसका मन धर्म में रमता गया। उसने पारिवारिक तथा सामाजिक दायित्वों से मुक्ति लेना उचित समझा। अपने स्थान पर ज्येष्ठ पुत्र को मनोनीत किया। स्वयं धर्म की आराधना में जुट गया। शुभ संयोग था, उसकी उपासना में किसी प्रकार का उपसर्ग या विघ्न नहीं हुआ। उसने बीस वर्ष तक सम्यक् रूप में श्रावक-धर्म का पालन किया। यों आनन्द की तरह साधनामय जीवन जीते हुए अन्त में समाधि-मरण प्राप्त कर वह सौधर्मकल्प में अरूणगव विमान में देव रूप में उत्पन्न हुआ।
