महावीर के साथ तत्त्वचर्चा करने में समर्थ नहीं है?
गोशालक-सकडालपुत्र ! जैसे कोई बलवान्, नीरोग, उत्तम लेखक की तरह अंगुलियों की स्थिर पकड़वाला, प्रतिपूर्ण-परिपूर्ण, परिपुष्ट हाथ-पैरवाला, पीठ, पार्श्व, जंघा आदि सुगठित अंगयुक्तउत्तम संहननवाला, अत्यन्त सघन, गोलाकार तथा तालाब की पाल जैसे कन्धोंवाला, लंघन-अतिक्रमणकूद कर लम्बी दूरी पार करना, प्लवन-ऊँचाई में कूदना आदि वेगपूर्वक या शीघ्रता से किए जाने वाले व्यायामों में सक्षम, ईटों के टुकड़ों से भरे हुए चमड़े के कूपे, मुग्दर आदि द्वारा व्यायाम का अभ्यासी, मौष्टिक-चमड़े की रस्सी में पिरोए हुए मुट्ठी के परिमाण वाले गोलाकार पत्थर के टुकड़े-व्यायाम करते समय इनसे ताडित होने से जिनके अङ्ग चिह्नित हैं-यों व्यायाम द्वारा जिसकी देह सुदृढ तथा सामर्थ्यशाली है, आन्तरिक उत्साह व शक्तियुक्त, ताड़ के दो वृक्षों की तरह सुदृढ़ एवं दीर्घ भुजाओं वाला, सुयोग्य, दक्ष-शीघ्रकारी, प्राप्तार्थ-कर्म-निष्णात, निपुणशिल्पोपगत-शिल्प या कला की सूक्ष्मता तक पहुँचा हुआ कोई युवा पुरूष एक बड़े बकरे, मेंढे, सुअर,मुर्गे, तीतर, बटेर, लवा, कबूतर, पपीहे, कौए या बाज के पंजे, पैर खुर, पूंछ, पंख सींग, रोम जहाँ से भी पकड़ लेता है, उसे वहीं निश्चलगतिशून्य तथा निष्पन्द-हलन-चलन रहित कर देता है, इसी प्रकार श्रमण भगवान् महावीर मुझे अनेक प्रकार के तात्त्विक अर्थों, हे तुओं (प्रश्नों, कारणों) तथा विश्लेषणों द्वारा जहाँ-जहाँ पकड़ लेंगे, वहींवहीं मुझे निरूत्तर कर देंगे। सकडालपुत्र ! इसीलिए कहता हूँ कि तुम्हारे धर्माचार्य भगवान् महावीर के साथ मैं तत्त्वचर्चा करने में समर्थ नहीं हूँ। गोशालक का कुंभकारापण में आगमन
__२२०. तए णं से सद्दालपुत्ते समणोवासए गोसालं मंखलि-पुत्तं एवं वयासीजम्हा णं देवाणुप्पिया! तुब्भे मम धम्मायरियस्स जाव (धम्मोवएसगस्स, समणस्स भगवओ) महावीरस्स संतेहिं, तच्चेहिं, सब्भूएहिं भावेहिं गुणकित्तणं करेह, तम्हा णं अहं तुब्भे पाडिहारिएणं पीढ जाव (फलग-सेजा) संथारएणं उवनिमंतेमि, नो चेव णं धम्मोत्ति वा, तवोत्ति वा। तं गच्छह णं तुब्भे मम कुंभारावणेसु पाडिहारियं पीढ-फलग जाव (सेजासंथारयं) ओगिण्हित्ताणं विहरह।
तब श्रमणोपासक सकडालपुत्र ने गोशालक मंखलिपुत्र से कहा-देवानुप्रिय! आप मेरे धर्माचार्य (धर्मोपदेशक श्रमण भगवान्) महावीर का सत्य, यथार्थ, तथ्य तथा सद्भूत भावों से गुणकीर्तन कर रहे हैं, इसलिए मैं आपको प्रातिहारिक पीठ, (फलक-शय्या) तथा संस्तारक हेतु आमंत्रित करता हूं, धर्म या तप मानकर नहीं। आप मेरे कुंभकारापण-बर्तनों की कर्मशाला में प्रातिहारिक पीठ, फलक, (शय्या तथा संस्तारक) ग्रहण कर निवास करें।
२२१. तए णं से गोसाले मंखलि-पुत्ते सद्दालपुत्तस्स समणोवासयस्स एयमलैं पडिसुणेइ, पडिसुणेत्ता कुंभारावणेसु पाडिहारियं पीढ जाव (फलग-सेज्जा-संथारयं) ओगिण्हित्ताणं विहरइ।

Therefore, I invite you to a hospitable seat, (platform-bed) and a comfortable place to stay, not as a matter of religion or penance. You may stay in my potter's quarter, accepting the hospitable seat, platform, (bed and comfortable place to stay).
221. Then, Goshalak Mankhaliputra, hearing this from the Shraman Upasak Sakdalaputra, accepted the hospitable seat, platform, (bed and comfortable place to stay) in the potter's quarter and stayed there.
