[८३ धूमप्रभा, तमः प्रभा एवं महातमःप्रभा। ये क्रमशः एक दूसरे के नीचे अवस्थित हैं। रत्नप्रभा भूमि में लोलुपाच्युत प्रथम नरक का एक ऊपरी विभाग है, जहाँ चौरासी हजार वर्ष की स्थिति वाले नारक रहते
तत्त्वार्थसूत्र के तीसरे अध्याय में अधोलोक और मध्यलोक का तथा चौथे अध्याय में उर्ध्वलोक का वर्णन है। जम्बूद्वीपप्रज्ञप्ति में इस सम्बन्ध में विस्तृत विवेचन है।

उस काल, उस समय श्रमण भगवान् महावीर के ज्येष्ठ अन्तेवासी गौतम गोत्रीय इन्द्रभूति नामक अनगार, जिनकी देह की ऊंचाई सात हाथ थी, जो समचतुरस्त्र-संस्थान-संस्थित थे--देह के चारों अंशों की सुसंगत, अंगों के परस्पर समानुपाती, सन्तुलित और समन्वित रचनामय शरीर के धारक थे, जो वज्र-ऋषभ-नाराच-संहनन-सुदृढ अस्थि-बन्धयुक्त विशिष्ट-देह-रचनायुक्त थे, कसौटी पर खचित स्वर्ण-रेखा की आभा लिए हुए कमल के समान जो गौर वर्ण थे, जो उग्र तपस्वी थे, दीप्त तपस्वी-कर्मों की भस्मसात् करने में अग्नि के समान प्रदीप्त तप करने वाले थे, तप्ततपस्वी--जिनकी देह पर तपश्चर्या की तीव्र झलक व्याप्त थी, जो कठोर एवं विपुल तप करने वाले थे, जो उराल--प्रबल--साधना में सशक्त, घोरगुण--परम उत्तम--जिनको धारण करने में अद्भुत शक्ति चाहिए--ऐसे गुणों के धारक, घोर तपस्वी-प्रबल तपस्वी, घोर ब्रह्मचर्यवासी-कठोर ब्रह्मचर्य के पालक, उत्क्षिप्तशरीर-दैहिक सारसंभाल या सजावट से रहित थे, जो विशाल तेजोलेश्या अपने शरीर के भीतर समेटे हुए थे बेले-बेले निरन्तर तप का अनुष्ठान करते हुए, संयमाराधना तथा तन्मूलक अन्यान्य तपश्चरणों द्वारा अपनी आत्मा को भावित--संस्कारित करते हुए विहार करते थे।
