एवं खलु देवाणुप्पिए! मए समणस्स भगवओ महावीरस्स अंतिए धम्मे निसंते। से वि य धम्मे मे इच्छिए पडिच्छिए अभिरुइए, तं गच्छ णं तुमं देवाणुप्पिए! समणं भगवं महावीरं वंदाहि जाव (णमंसाहि, सकारेहि, सम्माणेहि, कल्लाणं, मंगलं, देवयं, चेइयं) पजुवासाहि, समणस्स भगवओ महावीरस्स अंतिए पंचाणुव्वइयं सत्तसिक्खावइयं दुवालसविहं गिहिधम्म पडिवजाहि।
फिर आनन्द गाथापति ने श्रमण भगवान् महावीर के पास पांच अणुव्रत तथा सात शिक्षाव्रतरूप बारह प्रकार का श्रावक-धर्म स्वीकार किया। स्वीकार कर भगवान् महावीर को वन्दना-नमस्कार कर वह भगवान् से यों बोला--
भगवन् ! आजसे अन्ययूथिक-निर्ग्रन्थ धर्म-संघ के अतिरिक्त अन्य संघों से सम्बद्ध पुरूष, उनके देव, उन द्वारा परिगृहीत-स्वीकृत चैत्य-उन्हें वन्दना करना, नमस्कार करना, उनके पहले बोले बिना उनसे आलाप-संलाप करना, उन्हें धार्मिक दृष्टि से अशन-रोटी, भात आदि अन्न-निर्मित खाने के पदार्थ, पान-पानी, दूध आदि पेय पदार्थ, खादिम-खाद्य-फल, मेवा आदि अन्न-रहित खाने की वस्तुएं तथा स्वादिम-स्वाद्य-पान, सुपारी आदि मुखवास व मुख-शुद्धिकरण चीजें प्रदान करना, अनुप्रदान करना मेरे लिए कल्पनीय-धार्मिक दृष्टि से करणीय नहीं है अर्थात् ये कार्य मैं नहीं करूंगा। राजा, गणजन-समुदाय अथवा विशिष्ट जनसत्तात्मक गणतंत्रीय शासन, बल-सेना या बली पुरुष, देव व मातोपिता आदि गुरूजन का आदेश या आग्रह तथा अपनी आजीविका के संकटग्रस्त होने की स्थिति-मेरे लिए इसमें अपवाद हैं अर्थात् इन स्थितियों में उक्त कार्य मेरे लिए करणीय हैं।
श्रमणों, निर्गन्थों को प्रासुक-अचित, एषणीय-उन द्वारा स्वीकार करने योग्य-निर्दोष, अशन, पान, खाद्य तथा स्वाद्य आहार, वस्त्र, पात्र, कम्बल, पाद-प्रोञ्छन-रजोहरण या पैर पोंछने का वस्त्र, पाट, बाजोट, ठहरने का स्थान, बिछाने के लिए घास आदि, औषध-सूखी जड़ी-बूटी, भेषज-दवा देना मुझे कल्पता है-मेरे लिए करणीय है।
आनन्द ने यों अभिग्रह-संकल्प स्वीकार किया। वैसा कर भगवान् से प्रश्न पूछे। प्रश्न पूछकर उनका अर्थ-समाधान प्राप्त किया। समाधान प्राप्त कर श्रमण भगवान् महावीर को तीन बार वंदना की। वंदना कर भगवान के पास से, दूतीपलाश नामक चैत्य से रवाना हुआ। रवाना होकर जहां वाणिज्यग्राम नगर था, जहां अपना घर था, वहां आया। आकर अपनी पत्नी शिवनन्दा को यों बोला-देवानुप्रिये! मैंने श्रमण भगवान् के पास से धर्म सुना है। वह धर्म मेरे लिए इष्ट, अत्यन्त इष्ट और रुचिकर है। देवानुप्रिये! तुम भगवान् महावीर के पास जाओ, उन्हें वंदना करो, (नमस्कार करो, उनका सत्कार करो, सम्मान करो, वे कल्याणमय हैं, मंगलमय हैं, देव है, ज्ञान-स्वरूप हैं,) पर्युपासना करो तथा पांच अणुव्रत और सात शिक्षाव्रत-रूप बारह प्रकार का गृहस्थ-धर्म स्वीकार करो।

I will not offer them anything that is meant for the mouth, such as betel nut or mouthwash. This is not permissible for me, according to Dharma. This is not something I will do. However, I will make exceptions for the orders or requests of kings, communities, or specific democratic governments, for the sake of my livelihood, or in the face of danger.
