[समवायाङ्गसूत्र ३३, पुव्वुप्पण्णा वि य णं उप्पाइया वाहीओ खिप्पमेव उवसमंति ३४।
बुद्धों के अर्थात् तीर्थंकर भगवन्तों के चौतीस अतिशय कहे गये हैं, जैसे१. अवस्थित केश, श्मश्रु, रोम, नख होना, अर्थात् नख और केश आदि का नहीं बढ़ना। २. निरामय-रोगादि से रहित, निरुपलेप-मल रहित निर्मल देह-लता होना। ३. रक्त और मांस का गाय के दूध के समान श्वेत वर्ण होना। ४. पद्म-कमल के समान सुगन्धित उच्छ्वास निःश्वास होना। ५. मांस-चक्षु से अदृश्य प्रच्छन्न आहार और नीहार होना। ६. आकाश में धर्मचक्र का चलना। ७. आकाश में तीन छत्रों का घूमते हुए रहना। ८. आकाश में उत्तम श्वेत चामरों का ढोला जाना। ९. आकाश के समान निर्मल स्फटिकमय पादपीठयुक्त सिंहासन का होना। १०. आकाश में हजार लघु पताकाओं से युक्त इन्द्रध्वज का आगे-आगे चलना। ११. जहाँ-जहाँ भी अरहन्त भगवन्त ठहरते या बैठते हैं, वहाँ-वहाँ यक्ष देवों के द्वारा पत्र, पुष्प,
पल्लवों से व्याप्त, छत्र, ध्वजा, घंटा और पताका से युक्त श्रेष्ठ अशोक वृक्ष का निर्मित
होना। १२. मस्तक के कुछ पीछे तेजमंडल (भामंडल) का होना, जो अन्धकार में भी (रात्रि के समय
भी) दशों दिशाओं को प्रकाशित करता है। . १३. जहाँ भी तीर्थंकरों का विहार हो, उस भूमिभाग का बहुसम (एकदम समतल) और
रमणीय होना। १४. विहार-स्थल के कांटों का अधोमुख हो जाना। १५. सभी ऋतुओं को शरीर के अनुकूल सुखद स्पर्श वाली होना। १६. जहाँ तीर्थंकर विराजते हैं, वहाँ की एक योजन भूमि का शीतल, सुखस्पर्शयुक्त सुगन्धित
पवन से सर्व ओर संप्रमार्जन होना।। १७. मन्द, सुगन्धित जल-बिंदुओं से मेघ के द्वारा भूमि का धूलि-रहित होना। १८. जल और स्थल में खिलने वाले पांच वर्ण के पुष्पों से घुटने प्रमाण भूमिभाग का पुष्पोपचार
होना, अर्थात् आच्छादित किया जाना। १९. अमनोज्ञ (अप्रिय) शब्द, स्पर्श, रस, रूप और गन्ध का अभाव होना। २०. मनोज्ञ (प्रिय) शब्द, स्पर्श, रस, रूप और गन्ध का प्रादुर्भाव होना।
