Contribution of Prabhachandra to Indian
Logic
- Ms. Varsha Shah (Research Assistant, K.J. Somaiya
Centre for Studies in Jainism) The real object of the Logic (Nyaya) Philosophy is attainment of moksa. Pramana is the main theme of all Nyaya Philosophies. Different systems admit different number of Pramanas. The name Nyaya come to be applied later to a system of Philosophy which dealt with logic. The original name was 'anviksiki' from Anviksa (discussion). Fruitless Tarka was discouraged but that Anviksiki' which lead to attainment of knowledge of self was always regarded as the subject to be learnt.
Manikyanandi wrote the Pariksamukham culling the subject matter from the ocean of the sastras written by Akalanka. Pariksa or Tarka is the discussion used in finding out the strength or weakness of various arguments which are opposed to one another; 'Pari' means 'full' and Iksanam means 'discussion' of (subject), 'amukha' means the 'entrance to those who want to understand this subject. This work (Pariksamukham) is like a door." Prabhachandra was the most celebrated commentator of Pariksamukham. He work is entitled Prameyakamalamartanda. This Prabhachandra has been mentioned by Jinasena in Adipurana (838 A.D) in the following verse:
I praise Prabhachandra, the poet whose fame is white as the rays of the moon and who has encompassed the whole world by making 'Chandrodaya' 'Kumudchandrodaya' (rising of the moon).
Though Prameyakamalamartanda is in modified form, it does not delineat from the older works.
Prameyakamalamartanda is voluminous work and full of discussions regarding views of logicians other than Jain logicians. Com
