समय से वासुकुण्ड ग्राम का यह छोटा-सा क्षेत्र भगवान् की जन्मभूमि होने के कारण उन्हें समर्पित है।
महापण्डित राहुल सांकृत्यायन के विचार से भगवान् महावीर ने अपने सिद्धिलाभ के पहले तपस्वी जीवन के आठ वर्षावास वैशाली' में बिताये थे और सिद्धिलाभ के बाद चार और वर्षावास वैशाली में बिताये। वैशाली ही महावीर की जन्मभूमि थी। यह कम आश्चर्य की बात नहीं है कि जैनों ने अपने तीर्थकर की जन्मभूमि का नाम तक भुला दिया।
30 मार्च, 1961 ई. को 'सत्रहवाँ वैशाली-महोत्सव' आयोजित हुआ, जिसमें टी.एन. रामचन्द्रन ने अपने विचार इसप्रकार व्यक्त किये :
Vaisali (Basadha, is Hajipur sub-division of Muzaffarpur) is the birthplace of Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism. It was the capital of the Licchavi clan, related by marriage to the Magadh Kings and the ancestors of the king of Nepal, of the Mauryas and of the Guptas.
Subsequently but long prior to the birth of the last Tirthankara Mahavira, Vaisali became a republic and a not-worthy seat of democratic ideas. Such in brief is the life account of Lord Mahavira, which is important in our study of the cultural history of India, and the city of Vaisali played an important part in the spiritual effort which Mahavira made, Modern researches and excavations in and around here have definitely proved the correctness of identifying the present site with ancient Vaisali. Outside Vaisali is Kundgrama, at present represented by the modern village of Vaskunda. Here it was that Siddartha of the Natha-Vansa married Trishala, sister of Chetaka, who was then the president of the Licchivi Republic. To them and in this place was born Mahavira.
सन् 1962 ई. में 17 अप्रैल को अट्ठारहवें वैशाली-महोत्सव में प्रमुख वक्ता-पद से बोलते हुए डॉ. हजारीप्रसाद द्विवेदी ने कहा था कि वैशाली ही वह भूमि है, जिसमें भगवान् बुद्ध और भगवान् महावीर की चरणरज पड़ी है। यहाँ के आकाश में, वायुमण्डल में उनके सन्देश गूंज रहे हैं। महान् है यह नगरी वैशाली ! हिन्दु-धर्म के सर्वश्रेष्ठ-पुरुष मर्यादापुरुषोत्तम राम ने इसे पवित्र कहा है और महावीर की तो यह जन्मभूमि ही रही है। ___ सन् 1963 ई. में '19वें वैशाली-महोत्सव' पर प्राकृत जैन शोध-संस्थान की विद्वत्सभा में आचार्य विजयेन्द्र सूरि के एक लेख, वैशाली : जैनधर्म और जैनदर्शन' का पाठ किया गया था, जिसके कुछ अंश इसप्रकार हैं :
“वैशाली के निकट भगवान् महावीर का जन्म-स्थान निश्चित करने के कारण मुझे रूढ़िवादियों के विरोध का भी सामना करना पड़ा, पर मैं सदा नये-नये प्रमाणों के संग्रह में लगा रहा।
वैशाली-गण में स्थित कुण्डपुर' में भगवान् का जन्म हुआ। इसी भूमि में उनका बचपन
