सूरीश्वर और सम्राट्। दोनोंसे उपराम हो गया । अकबरके दर्बारमें रहनेवाला कट्टर मुसलमान बदाउनी, धर्मसभामें बैठनेवाले मौलवियोंमें जो झगड़ा होता था उसके लिए लिखता है:
“There he used to spend much time in IbādatKhānāh in the Company of learned men and Shaikhs. And especially on Friday nights, when he would sit up there the whole night continually occupied in discussing questions of religion, whether fundamental or collateral. The learned men used to draw the sword of the tongue on the battle-field of mutual contradiction and opposition, and the antagonism of the sects reached such a pitch that they would call one another fools and heretics." P. 262.) अर्थात्-बादशाह अपना बहुत ज्यादा वक्त इबादत-खानेमें शेखों और विद्वानोंकी संगतिमें रह कर गुजारता था । खास तरहसे शुक्रवारकी रातमें-जिसमें वह रातभर जागता रहता था-किसी मुख्य तत्त्वकी या किसी अवान्तर विषयकी चर्चा करनेमें निमग्न रहता था। उस समय विद्वान् और शेख, पारस्परिक विरुद्धोक्ति और मुकाबिला करनेकी रण-भूमिमें अपनी जीभरूपी तलवारका उपयोग करते थे। पक्ष समर्थनकारोंमें इतना वितंडावाद खड़ा हो जाता था कि, एक पक्षवाला दूसरे पक्षवालेको बेवकूफ और ढोंगी बताने लग जाता था।
मुसलमानोंकी इस लड़ाईके सबबसे ही अकबरने मुसलमानोंके उल्माओं (धर्मगुरुओं ) से एक इकरारनामा लिखवा लिया था। उसमें लिखा था कि,-" जब जब मतभेद हों तब तब उसका फैसला देनेका भौर कुरानेशरीफ़के हुक्मोंके माफिक धर्ममें तबदीली करनेका बाद
