ईथर के सम्बन्ध में भौतिक विज्ञानवेत्ता डा० ए० एस० एडिंग्टन ने लिखा है
__ "आज यह स्वीकार कर लिया गया है कि ईथर भौतिक द्रव्य नहीं है, भौतिक की अपेक्षा उसकी प्रकृति भिन्न है, भूत में प्राप्त पिण्डत्व और घनत्व गुणों का ईथर में अभाव होगा, परन्तु उसके अपने नये और निश्चयात्मक गुण होंगे............. ईथर का अभौतिक सागर'।"
अलबर्ट आइन्सटीन के अपेक्षावाद के सिद्धान्तानुसार 'ईथर अभीतिक, अपरिमाण्विक, अविभाज्य, अखण्ड, आकाश के समान व्यापक, अरूप, गति का अनिवार्य माध्यम और अपने-आप में स्थिर है'।
