"Jainism exercised even more profound influence on the thought and conduct of Akbar than christionity. He seems to have come into contact with Jain Scholars quite early...in 1568 A.D. He is said to have arranged a religious disputation between the Jain Scholars representing two rival scholars, of thoughts in 1582 A.D. He invited one of the greatest living Jain divines. Heera Vijaya Suri of Tapagachha from Gujrat to explain to him the principal of his religion. He was received with all possible honour and so impressed Akbar by his profound learning and ascetic character that the em pror practically gave up meat diet, released many prisoners and prohibited slaughter of Animals and birds for so many days in the year. Heera Vijaya Suri remained at the court for two years, was given the title of Jagat Guru' and was placed by Abul'-Fazal among the twenty-one top-ranking learned men at Akbar's court, supposed to be acquainted with the mysteries that of both the worlds. Subsequently several other Jain scholars invited the empror, prominent among them being Shanti Chandra, Vijay Sain Suri, Bhanu Chandra Upadhya, Harish Suri and Jaisome Upadhyaya. A few Jain teachers of noted continued to reside permanently at the court in 1591, the em pror having heard of the virtues and saintly aminence of Jinchandra Suri of Khartar Gachha school invited him to the court. Travelling from Cambay (Khambhat) on foot, like other Jain monks, he reached Lahore in 1591 A.D. and was respectfully received by the em pror like Heera-Vijay Suri, he refused to accept costly gifts and presents and explained to Akbar the doctrines of Jainism with so much success the empror was highly graftifies and conferred upon him the title of 'YugaPradhan' Jinchandra Suri spent four months of the rainy season at Lahore and in 1592 A.D. accompanied Akbar to Kashmir. He left Labore in 1593 A.D.. his influence on Akbar proved to be profound and lasting as that of Heer Vijay

The teachings of Jain monks (munis) produced a markable change in Akbar's life. He gave up hunting of which he had been so fond in his early days and obstained almost wholly from meat diet. He restricted the slaughters of animals and birds, prohibiting completely for more than half the days of the year. He sent Farmans by the imperial injunctions."
