मूलार्थ-जो व्यक्ति किसी प्राणी के मुखादि इन्द्रिय-द्वारों को हाथ से ढक कर या अवरुद्ध कर 'घुर-घुर' आदि अव्यक्त शब्द करते हुए प्राणी को मारता है, वह महा-मोहनीय कर्म की उपार्जना करता है ।
टीका-इस सूत्र में द्वितीय महा-मोहनीय कर्म का विषय वर्णन किया गया है । जो व्यक्ति किसी त्रस प्राणी के मुखादि इन्द्रिय-द्वारों को हाथ से ढक कर उसके प्राणों को अवरुद्ध कर 'घुर-घुर' आदि अव्यक्त शब्द करते हुए को मारता है अर्थात् जो त्रस प्राणियों की इस प्रकार के निर्दय व्यवहार से हिंसा करता है वह महा-मोहनीय कर्म की उपार्जना करता है । इस प्रकार निर्दयतापूर्वक दूसरे प्राणियों की हिंसा करने वाले का हृदय सदैव द्वेष-परिपूर्ण होता है और दिन प्रतिदिन उसका हृदय अधिक क्रूर होता चला जाता है अतः उसका महा-मोहनीय कर्म के बन्धन में आना स्वाभाविक है । व्यवहार-नय के अनुसार वह अकाल मृत्यु का उत्पादक माना जाता है और जैसा पहले कहा जा चुका है कि इन्द्रियों के अवरोध से किसी प्राणी की हिंसा करना एक हृदय-हीन और क्रूरतम कर्म है । क्योंकि ऐसे क्रूर कर्म में लिप्त व्यक्ति के हृदय से दया का भाव सर्वथा लोप हो जाता है अतः वह निर्बाध ही महा-मोहनीय कर्म का आश्रय बन जाता है । इसको 'समवायाङ्ग सूत्र' में वर्णन किये हुए तीस महा-मोहनीय-स्थानों में तीसरा स्थान माना गया है ।
अब सूत्रकार तृतीय महा-मोहनीय कर्म का विषय वर्णन करते हैं :जाततेयं समारब्भ बहुं ओरुभिया जणं । अंतो धूमेण मारेइ(ज्जा) महामोहं पकुव्वइ ।।३।।
जाततेजसं समारभ्य बहूनवरुड्य जनान् । अन्तधूमेन मारयति महामोहं प्रकुरुते ।।३।।
पदार्थान्वयः-जाततेयं-अग्नि समारब्भ-जला कर बहु-बहुत से जन-लोगों को ओलंभिया-अवरुद्ध कर अंतो-किसी स्थान के भीतर घेर कर धूमेण-धूम (धुएं) से मारेइ (ज्जा)-मारता है वह महामोह-महा-मोहनीय कर्म पकुव्वइ-उपार्जन करता है ।
