(1) जिस प्रकार सरोवर की रक्षा उसके किनारे (पाल) करते हैं, उसी प्रकार धर्म रूपी सरोवर की रक्षा ब्रह्मचर्य रूपी पाल द्वारा होती है। (2) जिस प्रकार कपाट के बंद दरवाजों की रक्षा अर्गला करती ॐ है, उसी प्रकार ब्रह्मचर्य की रक्षा के लिए धर्म-ध्यान रूपी कपाट है, उस पर उत्तम भावना रूपी अर्गला ॥ 卐 लगी है, जो कपाट को खुलने नहीं देती। ब्रह्मचर्य व्रत दुर्गति के मार्ग को बंद कर देता है। (3) जिस प्रकार 5
रथ के पहियों के आरों को उसकी नाभि धारण करती है, उसी प्रकार शांति आदि गुणों को ब्रह्मचर्य धारण करता है। (4) जैसे विशाल वृक्ष का स्कंध, शाखाएँ, टहनियाँ, पुष्प आदि का आधार होता है, उसी प्रकार समस्त प्रकार के व्रतों का आधार ब्रह्मचर्य है। (5) धर्मरूपी महानगर की रक्षा के लिए ब्रह्मचर्य व्रत प्रकोट के कपाट की अर्गला के समान है। (6) अनेक रस्सियों में बँधा इन्द्रध्वज महोत्सव की शोभा बढ़ाता है, उसी प्रकार ब्रह्मचर्य अनेक गुणों से सुशोभित है। ब्रह्मचर्य के खण्डित होने पर
(1) जिस प्रकार भूमि पर पटका हुआ मिट्टी का घड़ा फूट जाता है, उसी प्रकार ब्रह्मचर्य के नष्ट होने पर विनय, शील, तप आदि सभी गुण नष्ट हो जाते हैं। (2) काँटे लगने से शरीर शल्ययुक्त छिन-भिन्न म हो जाता है, उसी प्रकार धर्म भी छिन्न-भिन्न हो जाता है। (3) पर्वत से लुढ़की हुई शिला खण्डित हो जाती
है, उसी प्रकार अन्य व्रत भी खण्डित हो जाते हैं। (4) जिस प्रकार अग्नि द्वारा जली लकड़ी, पिसा हुआ गेहूँ चूर्ण-चूर्ण हो जाते हैं, उसी प्रकार ब्रह्मचर्य के नष्ट हो जाने से सभी गुण चूर-चूर हो जाते हैं।
-सूत्र 141, पृ. 346 EXPLAINING CELIBACY The illustrations explain the greatness of celibacy with metaphors --
(1) Like the parapet protects a pool, celibacy protects the pool of religion. (2) A bolt on the door protects a cupboard. In the same way the bolt of noble attitude protects the cupboard of religious meditation that contains the gem of celibacy. Also, celibacy acts as bolt on the door that prevents passage to disgrace. (3) Like the central socket of a wheel holds its spokes, celibacy holds virtues like serenity. (4) As the trunk of a tree is the base of its branches, leaves and flowers, so is the vow of celibacy for all other vows.(5) For the security of the city of religion the vow celibacy acts as the door bolt of city gate. (6) The giant festival flag held with numerous holding ropes adds to the beauty of a festival; in the same way the flag of the vow of celibacy held with numerous holding ropes of virtues adds to the beauty of ascetic conduct. When vow of celibacy is broken
(1) As a pitcher thrown on ground shatters to pieces, so on breaking of the vow of celibacy all virtues including modesty, uprightness, and penance get destroyed. (2) As a body is filled with wounds when pierced by thoms, so religion gets damaged when vow of celibacy is broken. (3)As a rock tumbling down the slope of a hill breaks to pieces, so does all other vows shen vow of celibacy is broken. (4) As a piece of wood on burning and wheat grains on grinding turn to powder, so do all virtues when the vow of celibacy is broken.
