cause pain by other means, and (3) dhan-haran-to deprive the enemy of his wealth if he is comparatively weak.
Policy of guile (bhed) is of three kinds—(1) sneharagapan-breaking amicable relationship, (2) samharshotpadan--provoking competition, i and (3) samtarjan-use of insult and threat.
In some copies of the text, pradan is mentioned in place of dand. Pradan means to reward, honour, cause financial gains or other such benefits to the adversary. In this context the commentator has also quoted an ancient verse from ethical works—"One should win over seniors or strong by bowing, braves by sowing dissension, lowly or weak by rewarding and equals by fighting."

पुद्गल-पद PUDGAL-PAD (SEGMENT OF MATTER)
२८५. तिविहा पोग्गला पण्णत्ता, तं जहा-पओगपरिणता, मीसापरिणता, वीससापरिणता।
२८५. पुद्गल तीन प्रकार के हैं-(१) प्रयोग-परिणत-जीव के द्वारा ग्रहण किये हुए पुद्गल, (२) मिश्र-परिणत-जीव के प्रयोग (प्रयत्न) तथा स्वाभाविक रूप से परिणत पुद्गल, और (३) विस्रसास्वभाव से परिणत पुद्गल। ____ 285. Pudgal (matter) is of three kinds—(1) prayog-parinattransformed through absorption or consumption by beings, (2) mishraparinat-transformed by efforts of a being as well as naturally transformed, and (3) visrasa-naturally transformed. नरक-पद NARAK-PAD (SEGMENT OF HELL)
२८६. तिपतिट्ठिया णरगा पण्णत्ता, तं जहा-पुढविपतिट्ठिया, आगासपतिट्ठिया, आयपइट्ठिया। णेगम-संगह-ववहाराणं पुढविपतिट्ठिया, उज्जुसुतस्स आगासपतिट्ठिया, तिण्हं सद्दणयाणं आयपतिट्ठिया।
२८६. नरक त्रिप्रतिष्ठित (तीन पर आश्रित) हैं-(१) पृथ्वी-प्रतिष्ठित, (२) आकाश-प्रतिष्ठित, और (३) आत्म-प्रतिष्ठित।
(१) (व्यवहार दृष्टि) नैगम, संग्रह और व्यवहारनय की अपेक्षा से नरक पृथ्वी पर प्रतिष्ठित हैं।
(२) (नय दृष्टि) ऋजुसूत्रनय की अपेक्षा से वे आकाश-प्रतिष्ठित हैं। ___(३) (शुद्ध दृष्टि) शब्द, समभिरूढ़ तथा एवम्भूतनय की अपेक्षा से आत्म-प्रतिष्ठित हैं। क्योंकि शुद्ध नय की दृष्टि से प्रत्येक वस्तु अपने स्व-भाव में ही रहती है।
286. Narak (hells) rest on three-(1) prithvi-pratishthit (resting on earth), (2) akash-pratishthit (resting in space), and (3) atma-pratishthit (resting on self).
