householder has been snatched away." That is the reason we say that we 卐 accept things given to us (datt), we eat things given to us and we allow accepting things given to us. This way as we accept what is given so on up to ... we observe restraint (samyat )... and so on up to ... through three means (karan) and three methods and so on up to ... thus we 5 are perfectly prudent (ekaant pundit). On the other hand, noble ones! It is you who are devoid of restraint (asamyat) and so on up to through three means (karan) and three methods ( yoga). complete ignorant (ekaant baal).

१२. [ प्र. ] तए णं ते अन्नउत्थिया ते थेरे भगवंते एवं वयासी-केण कारणेणं अज्जो ! अम्हे तिविहं
जाव एतबाला यावि भवामो ?
१२. [ प्र. ] तत्पश्चात् उन अन्यतीर्थिकों ने स्थविर भगवन्तों से इस प्रकार पूछा- आर्यो ! हम किस कारण से (कैसे) त्रिविध - त्रिविध... यावत् एकान्तबाल हैं ?
12. [Q.] At this the heretics inquired from the senior ascetics – Noble ones! Why do you say that we are devoid of restraint (asamyat) and so on up to ... through three means (karan) and three methods...
and so
on up to ... are complete ignorant (ekaant baal ) ?
१३ . [ उ. ] तए णं ते थेरा भगवंतो ते अन्नउत्थिए एवं वयासी - तुन्भे णं अज्जो ! अदिन्नं गेण्हह, अदिन्नं भुंजह, अदिन्नं साइज्जह, तए णं अज्जो ! तुब्भे अदिन्नं गे. जाव एगंतबाला यावि भवह।
१३. [ उ. ] इस पर उन स्थविर भगवन्तों ने उन अन्यतीर्थिकों से यों कहा- आर्यो ! तुम लोग अदत्त का ग्रहण करते हो, अदत्त भोजन करते हो और अदत्त की अनुमति देते हो; इसलिए हे आर्यो ! तुम अदत्त का ग्रहण करते हुए यावत् एकान्तबाल हो ।
13. [Ans.] The senior ascetics said to the heretics - Noble ones ! You accept things not given to you (adatt), you eat things not given to you and taste things not given to you. In other words you allow accepting (etc.) of things not given to you. This way as you accept what is not given and so on up to ... are complete ignorant (ekaant baal).
१४. तए णं ते अन्नउत्थिया ते थेरे भगवंते एवं वयासी-केण कारणेणं अज्जो ! अम्हे अदिन्नं हामो जाव एगंतबाला यावि भवामो ?
