of the desire for life and fear of death. With their knees up and heads 4 bent low, they sat immersed in meditation, enkindling (bhaavit) their
souls with ascetic-discipline and austerities in proximity of Shraman Bhagavan Mahavir.
४. तए णं ते अनउत्थिया जेणेव थेरा भगवंतो तेणेव उवागच्छंति, उवागच्छित्ता ते थेरे भगवंते एवं वयासी-तुब्भे णं अज्जो ! तिविहं तिविहेणं अस्संजयअविरयअप्पडिहय जहा सत्तमसए बितिए उद्देसए (स.. ७, उ. २, सु. १ [ २ ]) जाव एगंतबाला यावि भवह।
४. एक बार वे अन्यतीर्थिक, जहाँ स्थविर भगवन्त थे, वहाँ आये। उनके निकट आकर वे स्थविर भगवन्तों से यों कहने लगे- 'हे आर्यो ! तुम त्रिविध-त्रिविध (तीन करण, तीन योग से) असंयत,
अविरत. अप्रतिहतपापकर्म (पापकर्म का निरोध नहीं किये) तथा पापकर्म का प्रत्याख्यान नहीं किये हए 卐 हो'; इत्यादि जैसे सातवें शतक के द्वितीय उद्देशक (सू. १/२) में कहा गया है, तदनुसार कहा; यावत् ॥ तुम एकान्त बाल (अज्ञानी) भी हो।
4. Once those heretics came where the senior ascetics (sthavirs) lived. * Approaching the senior ascetics they said-O noble ones ! You are devoid 卐 of restraint (asamyat), detachment (avirat), control on and renunciation +
of sinful indulgence (apratihat and apratyakhyan) towards all praan 47 (two to four sensed beings; beings)... and so on up to... all sattva (immobile beings; entities) through three means (karan) and three
methods (yoga). [As mentioned in seventh chapter, second lesson, 5 aphorism 1/2 up to you are also complete ignorant (ekaant baal)'). 卐 ५. [प्र. ] तए णं ते थेरा भगवंतो ते अनउत्थिए एवं वयासी-केणं कारणेणं अज्जो ! अम्हे तिविहं
तिविहेणं अस्संजय-अविरय जाव एगंतबाला यावि भवामो ? 卐 ५. [प्र. ] इस पर उन स्थविर भगवन्तों ने उन अन्यतीर्थिकों से इस प्रकार पूछा-'आर्यो ! किस कारण से हम त्रिविध-त्रिविध असंयत, अविरत, यावत् एकान्तबाल हैं ?

अदिन्नं भुंजह, अदिन्नं सातिज्जह। तए णं तुब्भे अदिनं गेण्हमाणा, अदिन्नं भुंजमाणा, अदिन्नं सातिज्जमाणा ॐ तिविहं तिविहेणं अस्संजय अविरय जाव एगंतबाला यावि भवह।
६. [उ. ] तदनन्तर उन अन्यतीर्थिकों ने स्थविर भगवन्तों से इस प्रकार कहा-हे आर्यो ! तुम 5 अदत्त (किसी के द्वारा नहीं दिया हुआ) पदार्थ ग्रहण करते हो, अदत्त का भोजन करते हो और अदत्त
