feelings he is considered spiritually pure. That is why it is said that when he proceeds to the Guru with sincere intent of atonement but has met his death on the way, even before doing atonement, he is spiritually pure. He is considered steadfast in conduct simply when he has done atonement on his own. (Vritti, leaf 376)
जलते हुए दीपक आदि में क्या जलता है ? WHAT BURNS IN A LAMP
१२. [प्र. ] पईवस्स णं भंते! झियायमाणस्स किं पईवे झियाइ, लट्ठी झियाइ, वत्ती झियाइ, तेल्ले झियाइ, दीवचंपए झियाइ, जोती झियाइ ?
[उ. ] गोयमा ! नो पईवे झियाइ, जाव नो दीवचंपए झियाइ, जोई झियाइ ।
१२. [ प्र. ] भगवन् ! जलते हुए दीपक में क्या जलता है ? क्या दीपक जलता है ? दीपयष्टि ( दीवट ) जलती है ? बत्ती जलती है ? तेल जलता है ? दीपचम्पक (दीपक का ढक्कन) जलता है, या ज्योति (दीपशिखा ) जलती है ?
[उ.] गौतम ! दीपक नहीं जलता यावत् दीपक का ढक्कन भी नहीं जलता, किन्तु ज्योति (दीपशिखा ) जलती है ।
[Ans.] Gautam ! The lamp does not burn cover does not burn; but only the flame burns.

12. [Q.] Bhante ! What is it that burns in a lighted lamp ? Does the 5 lamp burn ? Does the pot of the lamp (deep-yashti) burn ? Does the wick 卐 burn ? Does the oil burn ? Does the cover burn ? Or does the flame burn ?

१३. [ प्र. ] अगारस्स णं भंते! झियायमाणस्स किं अगारे झियाइ, कुड्डा झियाइ, कडणा झियाइ, धारणा झियाइ, बलहरणे झियाइ, वंसा झियाइ, मल्ला झियाइ, वग्गा झियाइ, छित्तरा झियाइ, छाणे झियाइ, जोती झियाइ ?
[उ. ] गौतम ! घर नहीं जलता, भींतें नहीं जलतीं, यावत् छादन नहीं जलता, किन्तु ज्योति (अग्नि) जलती है।
भगवती सूत्र (३)

( खसखस आदि की टाटी या पतली दीवार) जलती हैं ? धारण (नीचे के मुख्य स्तम्भ) जलते हैं? फ्र
हरण (मुख्य स्तम्भ धारण पर रहने वाली आड़ी लम्बी लकड़ी - बल्ली) जलता है ? बाँस जलते हैं ? 5 मल्ल (भींतों के आधारभूत स्तम्भ) जलते हैं ? वर्ग (बाँस आदि को बाँधने वाली छाल) जलते हैं ? छित्त्वर (बाँस आदि को ढकने के लिए डाली हुई चटाई या छप्पर) जलते हैं ? छादन (छाण-दर्भादियुक्त पटल) जलता है अथवा ज्योति (अग्नि) जलती है ?
