________________ fruition a karma particle loses its potency. Such spent karma particle is 卐 called no-karma. The shedding of this no-karma is called nirjara. Karma $1 is the cause of experience (vedana). That is why vedana is called fructified karma, or simply karma. And nirjara is called no-karma (spent karma or karma devoid of potency). In other words although karmic particles always exist, they are not always called karma. They are classified as karma only when they fuse with soul due to passions (kashaya) and association (yoga). They remain karma till the last moment of experience. Once they lose their potency they no more remain karma but turn into no-karma and are shed. जीवों की शाश्वतता-अशाश्वतता ETERNALITY AND NON-ETERNALITY OF JIVAS २३. [प्र. १ ] नेरइया भंते ! किं सासया, असासया ? _[उ. ] गोयमा ! सिय सासया, सिय असासया। [प्र. १ ] भगवन् ! नैरयिक जीव शाश्वत हैं या अशाश्वत हैं ? ___ [उ. ] गौतम ! नैरयिक जीव कथंचित् शाश्वत हैं और कथंचित् अशाश्वत हैं। 23. [Q. 1] Bhante ! Are infernal beings eternal (shaashvat) or noneternal (ashaashvat)? । [Ans.] Gautam ! Infernal beings are sometimes eternal (shaashvat) and sometimes non-eternal (ashaashvat). [प्र. २ ] से केणटेणं भंते ! एवं वुच्चइ 'नेरइया सिय सासया, सिय असासया' ? ___ [उ. ] गोयमा ! अब्बोच्छित्तिनयट्ठताए सासया, वोच्छित्तिणयट्ठयाए असासया। से तेणद्वेणं जाव सिय असासया। - [प्र. २ ] भगवन् ! ऐसा आप किस कारण से कहते हैं कि नैरयिक जीव कथंचित् शाश्वत हैं और कथंचित् अशाश्वत हैं ? [उ. ] गौतम ! अव्युच्छित्ति (द्रव्यार्थिक) नय की अपेक्षा से नैरयिक जीव शाश्वत हैं और व्युच्छित्ति (पर्यायार्थिक) नय की अपेक्षा से नैरयिक जीव अशाश्वत हैं। इस कारण से, गौतम ! मैं ऐसा कहता हूँ कि नैरयिक जीव कथंचित् शाश्वत हैं और कथंचित् अशाश्वत हैं। [Q.2] Bhante !
