[Q. 2] Bhante ! Why is it so?
[Ans.] Gautam ! Living beings are said to have three types of application (prayog ) – manah-prayog (mental application), vachan - + prayog (vocal application) and kaaya-prayog (physical application). With these three types of applications living beings (souls) acquire karmas. In the same way these three types of applications should be mentioned in 5 context of all five-sensed beings. Earth-bodied to plant-bodied beings 5 (the five immobile beings) do that (acquire karma particles) through one application (physical ). Two to four-sensed beings (vikalendriyas) have only two applications-vocal and physical. Thus they acquire karmas through these two applications. This way all beings acquires karmas through application and not naturally. That is why it is said... and so on 卐

up to... not naturally. In the same way acquisition (upachaya ) of karmas 5
through applications specific to the type of being... and so on up to ... 卐 Vaimaniks should be mentioned.

Elaboration-This aphorism details the process of bonding of karmas. The karmic particles (karma vargana) are spread all over the universe (Lok) and they have unending interaction with soul space-points in infinite numbers. However, as long as the soul does not acquire them by indulgence or actions through mental, vocal and physical instruments they do not get bonded. All the beings in the world acquire karma particles through such application and not naturally (time, nature, fate etc.). If this is not accepted, even Siddhas (the liberated souls) who are free of any association or application will also acquire karma particles, but that is not possible.

६. [ प्र. ] वत्थस्स णं भंते ! पोग्गलोवचए किं सादीए सपज्जवसिए ? सादीए अपज्जवसिए ? अणादीए सपज्जवसिए ? अणादीए अपज्जवसिए ?
विवेचन : प्रस्तुत सूत्र में कर्मबन्ध की प्रक्रिया बताई है। कर्मवर्गणा के पुद्गल पूरे लोक में व्याप्त हैं और वे 5 आत्म-प्रदेशों के साथ अनन्तावगाढ भी हैं, फिर भी जब तक आत्मा, मन, वचन तथा काययोग की प्रवृत्ति कर उन्हें ग्रहण नहीं करता, तब तक उनका बंधन नहीं होता। संसार के समस्त जीवों के कर्मपुद्गलों का उपचय प्रयोग - स्वप्रयत्न से होता है, स्वाभाविकरूप (काल, स्वभाव, नियति आदि) से नहीं। अगर ऐसा नहीं माना जायेगा तो सिद्ध जीव योगरहित हैं, उनके भी कर्मपुद्गलों का उपचय होने लगेगा, परन्तु यह सम्भव नहीं ।
[ उ. ] गोयमा ! वत्थस्स णं पोग्गलोवचए सादीए सपज्जवसिए, नो सादीए अपज्जवसिए नो अणा दीए सपज्जवसिए, नो अणादीए अपज्जवसिए ।
