___11. [Q. 1] Bhante ! Are infernal beings (naarak jiva) with potency (savirya) or without potency (avirya)?
(Ans.) Gautam ! Infernal beings are savirya in terms of labdhivirya (dormant potency) and savirya as well as avirya in terms of karan-virya (active potency).
[Q.] Bhante ! Why do you say that ?
(Ans.] Gautam ! The infernal beings endowed with inclination to rise (utthaan), action (karma), strength (bal), potency (virya), and self-exertion (purushakar-parakram) are savirya both in terms of labdhivirya (dormant potency) as well as karan-virya (active potency). And the infernal beings devoid of inclination to rise (utthaan), action (karma), strength (bal), potency (virya), and self-exertion (purushakar-parakram) are savirya in terms of labdhivirya (dormant potency) and avirya in terms of karan-virya (active potency). That is the cause of the aforesaid statement, Gautam !
[2] As has been said about infernal beings so should also be read for beings up to five-sensed animals.
[3] As has been said about living beings in general so should also be read for human beings, the only difference is that Siddhas should be omitted.
[4] As has been said about infernal beings so should also be read for Vanavyantar, Jyotishk and Vaimanik gods.
"Bhante ! Indeed that is so. Indeed that is so." With these words... and so on up to... ascetic Gautam resumed his activities.
