हो सकता है कि नवीं सदी में हुए महावीराचार्य और प्रायः ३०० वर्ष पूर्व हुए यतिवृषभ की गणनाविधियों में अन्तर रहा हो, तथापि यतिवृषभ कालीन जैनाचार्य का गणित प्रेथ न होने से इस विषय में कुछ कहा नहीं जा सकता।
अन्त में, यह भी उल्लेखनीय है कि जैनाचार्यों की भांति यूनान में संख्याभी को २न के रूप में प्ररूपण करने का प्रचलन था। "The Neo-Pythagoreans improved the olassifioation thus. बीजगणित इस ग्रंथ में उपयोग में आये हुए प्रतीकों का उपयोग केवल संख्या निरूपण के लिये ही नहीं वरन् कुछ क्रियाओं के लिये भी हुआ है। वीरसेन द्वारा अर्द्धच्छेदों और वर्गशलाकाओं के प्रमाण को शन्दों में व्यक्त करना सरल सा प्रतीत होता है, तथापि यह कथन करना कि log. log. राशि,HIP से १ वर्ग स्थान भी ऊपर नहीं पहुँची है, वास्तव में यह निरूपण है -

स्पष्ट है, कि ऐसे निरूपणों से भरे हुए इस ग्रंथ के रचने में वीरसेन के पास क्रियात्मक प्रतीकत्व अवश्य रहा होगा। यतिवृषम के द्वारा जगश्रेणी का प्रतीक एक आड़ी रेखा होना, तथा उसके घन का रूप में प्ररूपित होना, नानाघाट शिलालेख काल से लेकर कुशन काल अथवा उससे भी बाद के क्षत्रप
और आन्न शिलालेख कालीन प्रतीत होता है। सबसे महत्वपूर्ण बात यह है, कि घटाने के लिये ऋण शब्द (रिण) का उपयोग, पृष्ठ ६०२ से लेकर ६१७ तक हुआ है। बख्शाली हस्तलिपि में रिण के + उपयोग में लाया गया है। + प्रतीक की उत्पत्ति के विषय में विभिन्न मतों को हम प्रस्तुत करते हैं,
"The origin of the Bakhshali minus sign (+) has been the sub. ject of much conjecture. Thibaut suggested its possible connection with the supposed Diophantine negative sign (reversed 4, tachygraphio abbreviation for decis meaning wanting). Kaye believes it. The Greek sign for minus, however, is not s but î. It is even doutful if Diophantus did actually use it: or whether it is as old as the Bakhshali cross.* Hoernlepresumed the Bakhshali minus sign to be the abbreviation ka of the Sanskrit word kanita, or nu (or nu) of nyuna, both of which mean diminished and both of which abbreviations in the Brahmi characters would be denoted by a cross. Hoernle was right, thinks Datta, 80 far as he sought for the origin of + in a tachygrapbic abbreviation of some Sanskrit word. But, as neither the word kanita or pyuna is found to have been used in the Bakhshali work in connection with the subtractive operation, Datta finally, rejects the theory of Hoernle and believes it to be the abbre१ Heath vol.
