________________ तिलोयपण्णत्तिका गणित पायथेगोरियन वर्ग के विषय में प्लेटो के कुछ कथन अति मनोरंजक तथा ऐतिहासिक दृष्टि से महत्वपूर्ण हैं "They have in view practicality, and are always speaking in a narrow and ridiculous manner of squaring and extending and applying and the like............. Then, my noble friend, geometry will draw the soul towards truth and create the spirit of philosophy, and raise up that which is now, unhappily, allowed to fall dowo....... And do you not know also that although they make use of visible forms and reason on them they are thinking not of those but of the ideal which they resemble, not of the figures which they draw, but of the absolute square, the absolute diameter and so on............ And when I speak of the other division of the intelligible you will understand me to speak of that other sort of knowledge which reason herself attains by the power of dialectio, using the hypotheses, not as first principles, but as base bypotheses, in order that she may soar beyond them to the first principle of the whole, and clinging to this and then to that which depends on this by successive steps. She may descend again without the aid of any sensible object from ideas through ideas, and in ideas she ends." उपर्युक्त वर्णन, ऐसा प्रतीत होता है, मानो आत्मा, आयत चतुरस्राकार लोक (जिसका तल वर्गाकार होता है), जम्बूद्वीप (जो वृत्ताकार होता है) के विष्कम्भ, आदि के विषय में किया जा रहा हो । वास्तव में, यूनान का पायथेगोरियन वर्ग अथवा बाद के दर्शनशास्त्री, गणित में क्या व्यावहारिक गणना के लिये रुचि रखते थे? नहीं, वे वास्तविक सत्य (absolute truth) के सम्बन्ध में ही रुचि रख कर, गणना करते थे। यही भारतवर्ष में वीरसेन तथा यतिवृषभ के परिकर्म ग्रंथादि विषयक उल्लेख से प्रतीत होता है। यदि जैनागम प्रणीत पुद्गल परमाणु के आधार पर कथंचित् प्रदेश संरचित आकाश की अवधारणाओं को लेकर आधुनिक ज्यामिति क्षेत्र में नये सुझाव दिये बावे तो प्रश्न उठता है कि अविभागी पुद्गल परमाणु किसे माना जावे। अनन्तान्त पुद्गल परमाणुओं का एक क्षेत्रावगाही होना, स्पर्श ( contact) के सिद्धान्त के लिये उपधारित हो, वह तो ठीक है, परन्तु क्या हम अणुविभंजन विधियों से उस अन्तिम परमाणु को प्राप्त करने की चरम सीमा तक पहुँच सकते हैं, अथवा नहीं डेन्टन का विचार है, "In fact, the ultimate partiole of matter presents great difficulties; it need not be the electron-probably is not-but the atomic notion of the constitution of matter does sprely demand an ultimate particle, and such reasoning as bas been suggested shows that to this ultimate particle no properties of any sort-not even magnitude can be assigned. The alternative of pushing the responsibility on to the member of an unending series of particles can hardly be said to satisfy the mind which demands a clear physical conception of nature, 3 १.
