Introduction
sometimes we find it referred to as a Sūtra-work also. ?
The Siitras of Kaņāda possibly remained negleted for long. We hear of a Bharadvajavrtti on them. It may be identical with the
V rtti quoted by Candrānanda’ or by Sankaramis'ra". But we have no evidence to establish this identity. Sankaramis'ra does not attach much importance to the Vriti before him as he is found to regret not to have any important commentary to depend upon*. It is also quite probable that the Vrtti quoted by Sankar is different from that utilised by Candrānanda. The last two chapters of an anonymous Vais'e şikasūtravrtti written under the patronage of king Vallālasena (c. 1158-1178A D.) are extant in manuscripts. It seems to have been influenced by the Nyāya theories and no influence of ancient Vaiseșika tradition is visible in it. Sankaramisra's Upashara is available in print for the last one hundred years. His Sutrapatha and interpretation were generally taken as authoritative. MM. Dr. Gopinātha Kaviraja and Pt. Vīrarāghavācārya felt the necessity of a critical edition of the Vais'eşikasutras. The materials available from various sources now point out that Sankara does not always preserve the ancient Vais'eșika tradition and that his Sütrupātha is also defective. The work under consideration wonderfully agrees with the ancient Sutrapatha as preserved in the Kanzdasiitrunibandha of Bhattavādīndra or to its Summary as published by the Mithilā Institute.
