महापुराणे उत्तरपुराणम्
कथ्यतामिति पापेन प्रष्टव्यास्तेन मन्त्रिणः । निर्व्रन्थाः सन्ति देवेति ते वदिष्यन्ति सोऽपि तान् ॥ ४०३ ॥ आचारः कीदृशस्तेषामिति प्रक्ष्यति भूपतिः । निजपाणिपुटामश्रा धनहीना गतस्पृहाः ॥ ४०४ ॥ अहिंसाम्रतरक्षार्थं त्यक्तचेलादिसंवराः । साधनं तपसो मत्वा देहस्थित्यर्थमाहृतिम् ॥ ४०५ ॥ 'एकद्वयुपोषितप्रान्ते भिक्षाकालेऽङ्गदर्शनात् । निर्वाचनात्स्वशास्त्रोक्तां ग्रहीतुमभिलाषिणः ॥ ४०६ ॥ आत्मनो घातके श्रायके च ते समदर्शिनः । क्षुत्पिपासादिवाधायाः सहाः सत्यपि कारणे ॥ ४०७ ।। परपाषण्डिवनान्यैरदरामभिलाषुकाः । २ सर्पा वा विहितावासा ज्ञानध्यानपरायणाः ॥ ४०८ ॥ अनुसञ्चारदेशेषु संवसन्ति मृगैः समम् । इति वक्ष्यन्ति दृष्टं स्वैविंशिष्टास्तेऽस्य मन्त्रिणः ॥ ४०९ ॥ श्रुत्वा तत्सहितुं नाहं शक्नोग्यक्रमवर्तनम् । तेषां पाणिपुढे प्राच्यः पिण्डः शुल्को विधीयताम् ॥ ४१० ॥ इति राजोपदेशेन याचिष्यन्ते नियोगिनः । अग्रपिण्डमभुञ्जानाः स्थास्यन्ति मुनयोऽपि ते ॥ ४११ ॥ तद्दृष्ट्वा दर्पिणो नग्ना नाज्ञां राज्ञः प्रतीप्सवः । किं जातमिति ते गत्वा ज्ञापयिष्यन्ति तं नृपम् ४१२ सोपि पापः स्वयं क्रोधादरुणीभूतवीक्षणः । उद्यमी पिण्डमाहतु प्रस्फुरदशनच्छदः ॥ ४१३ ॥ सोढुं तदक्षमः कश्चिदसुरः शुद्धहक्तदा । हनिष्यति तमन्यायं शक्तः सन् सहते न हि ॥ ४१४ ॥ सोsपि रप्रभां गत्वा सागरोपमजीवितः । चिरं चतुर्मुखो दुःखं लोभादनुभविष्यति ॥ ४१५ ॥ धर्मनिर्मूलविध्वंसं सहन्ते न प्रभावुकाः । नास्ति सावद्यलेशेन विना धर्मप्रभावना ॥ ४१६ ॥

आज्ञा से पराङ्मुख रहते हों ? इसके उत्तरमें मन्त्री कहेंगे कि हे देव ! निर्मन्थ साधु अब भी आपकी आज्ञासे बहिर्भूत हैं । ४०२-४०३ ।। यह सुनकर राजा फिर पूछेगा कि उनका आचार कैसा है ? इसके उत्तर में मन्त्री लोग कहेंगे कि अपना हस्तपुट ही उनका बर्तन है अर्थात् वे हाथमें ही भोजन करते हैं, धनरहित होते हैं, इच्छारहित होते हैं, अहिंसा व्रतकी रक्षा के लिए वस्त्रादिका आवरण छोड़कर दिगम्बर रहते हैं, तपका साधन मानकर शरीरकी स्थिति के लिए एक दो उपवासके बाद भिक्षाके समय केवल शरीर दिखलाकर याचनाके बिना ही अपने शास्त्रोंमें कही हुई विधिके अनुसार आहार ग्रहण करनेकी इच्छा करते हैं, वे लोग अपना घात करनेवाले अथवा रक्षा करनेवाले पर समान दृष्टि रखते हैं, क्षुधा तृषा आदिकी बाधाको सहन करते हैं, कारण रहते हुए भी वे अन्य साधुनों के समान दूसरेके द्वारा नहीं दी हुई वस्तुकी कभी अभिलाषा नहीं रखते हैं, वे सर्पके समान कभी अपने रहनेका स्थान बनाकर नहीं रखते हैं, ज्ञान-ध्यानमें तत्पर रहते हैं और जहाँ मनुष्यों का संचार नहीं ऐसे स्थानों में हरिणोंके साथ रहते हैं । इस प्रकार उस राजाके विशिष्ट मन्त्री अपने द्वारा देखा हुआ हाल कहेंगे ॥ ४०४-४०६ ॥ यह सुनकर राजा कहेगा कि मैं इनकी अक्रम प्रवृत्तिको सहन करनेके लिए समर्थ नहीं हूं, इसलिए इनके हाथमें जो पहला भोजनका ग्रास दिया जाय वही कर रूपमें इनसे वसूल किया जावे ।। ४९० ।। इस तरह राजाके कहने से अधिकारी लोग मुनियोंसे प्रथम प्रास माँगेंगे और मुनि भोजन किये बिना ही चुप चाप खड़े रहेंगे। यह देख अहंकारसे भरे हुए कर्मचारी राजासे जाकर कहेंगे कि मालूम नहीं क्या हो गया है ? दिगम्बर साधु राजाकी आज्ञा माननेको तैयार नहीं हैं ॥। ४११ - ४१२ ।। कर्मचारियोंकी बात सुनकर क्रोध से राजाके नेत्र लाल हो जावेंगे और ओंठ फड़कने लगेगा । तदनन्तर वह स्वयं ही प्रास छीननेका उद्यम करेगा ।। ४१३ ।। उस समय शुद्ध सम्यग्दर्शनका धारक कोई असुर यह सहन नहीं कर सकेगा इसलिए राजाको मार देगा सो ठीक ही है क्योंकि शक्तिशाली पुरुष अन्यायको सहन नहीं करता है ।। ४१४ ।। यह चतुर्मुख राजा मरकर रत्नप्रभा नामक पहली पृथिवीमें जावेगा, वहाँ एक सागर प्रमाण उसकी आयु होगी और लोभ कषायके कारण चिरकाल तक दुःख भोगेगा ।। ४१५ ।। प्रभावशाली मनुष्य धर्मका निर्मूल नाश कभी नहीं सहन कर सकते और कुछ सावद्य ( हिंसापूर्ण ) कार्यके बिना धर्म प्रभावना हो नहीं सकती इसलिए सम्यग्दृष्टि असुर अन्यायी

The ministers replied, "Their hands are their vessels, they are without wealth, they have no desires, they are Digambara, having abandoned all coverings for the sake of protecting the vow of non-violence, they consider austerity as their means, and they take food only for the sustenance of their body, after one or two days of fasting, they only show their bodies during begging, and they do not beg, they desire to take food only according to the rules laid down in their scriptures, they look upon their killer and their protector with equal eyes, they endure hunger, thirst, and other afflictions, even when there is a reason for them, they do not desire anything that is not given to them by others, like snakes, they do not build a dwelling for themselves, they are devoted to knowledge and meditation, and they live in places where there is no human traffic, with the deer." Thus, the ministers, who were well-versed in the king's affairs, described what they had seen.

Hearing this, the king said, "I cannot tolerate their unrighteous conduct, therefore, let the first morsel of food that is given to them be taken as a tax from them."

Thus, the officials, at the king's command, would demand the first morsel from the ascetics, and the ascetics would stand silently without eating. Seeing this, the arrogant officials went to the king and said, "We don't know what has happened, the Digambara ascetics are not willing to obey your orders."

Hearing the officials, the king's eyes turned red with anger, and his lips began to tremble. Then, he himself tried to snatch the morsel.

At that time, an Asura, who was a pure Samyagdarshi, could not bear this, and therefore, he killed the king. It is right, because a powerful man does not tolerate injustice.

This four-faced king, after dying, went to the first earth, called Ratnapraba, where he lived for an age equal to an ocean, and suffered for a long time due to the passion of greed.
