महापुराणे उत्तरपुराणम् प्रामुवन्ति सुखं स्वर्गे चापवर्गे च संयमात् । मिथ्याशश्च दानादिपुण्येन स्वर्ग सुखम् ॥२२५ ॥ सम्प्रामुवन्ति तत्रैते शममाहात्म्यतः पुनः । कालादिलब्धिमाश्रित्य स्वतो वा परतोऽपि वा ॥ २२४ ॥ सदमेलाभयोग्याश्च भवन्स्यभ्यर्णमोचनाः । अन्ये तु भोगसंसका माढमिथ्यात्वशल्यकाः ॥ २२५॥ हिंसानृतान्यरैरामारस्यारम्भपरिग्रहै। पापं सचित्य संसारदुष्कूपे निपतन्ति ते ॥ २२६॥ इति तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा बहवो धर्ममाचरन्' । अथ सागरदत्ताख्यश्रेष्ठिना स्वायुषोऽवधी ॥२२॥ परिपृष्टे मुनिश्वाह दिवसाविंशदित्यसौ । तच्छृत्वा नगरं श्रेष्ठी प्रविश्याप्टाहिकी मुदा ॥ २२८॥ पूजा विधाय दत्वात्मपदं ज्येष्ठाय सूनवे । आपृल्य बान्धवान् सर्वान् द्वाविंशतिदिनानि सः॥ २२९ ॥ सन्न्यम्य विधिवलोकमवापदमृताशिनाम् । अन्येच गदगोऽसौ लोभेनाग्रेन चोदितः ॥२३॥ कुबेरदरामाहूय तव सारधन पिता । किमदर्शयदिस्येवं पृष्टवान् दुष्टचेतसा ॥ २३ ॥ तीव्रलोभविषक्तोऽयमित्यसाववगम्य तत् । किमावाभ्यामविज्ञातं धनमस्ति गुरोः पृथक ॥ २३२ ॥ सन्न्यस्य विधिना स्वर्गगतस्योपरि दूषणम् । महत्पापमिदं वक्तुं भातस्तव न युज्यते ॥ २३ ॥ श्रोत ममापि चेत्याह सोऽप्यपास्यास्य दुर्मतिम् । विभज्य सकलं वस्तु चैत्यचैत्यालयादिकम् ॥२३॥ निर्माय जिनपूजाश्च विधाय विविधाः सदा । दानं चतुर्विध पात्रत्रये भक्त्या प्रवर्त्य तौ। २३५॥ कालं गमयत: स्मोद्यत्प्रीती प्रति परस्परम् । दत्वा सागरसेनाय कदाचिद्रतिपूर्वकम् ॥ २३१॥ मिक्षां कुबेरदत्ताख्यः सहितो धनमित्रया। अभिवन्ध किमावाभ्यां तनूजो लप्स्यते न वा ॥२३॥
नैवं चेत्प्रजिष्याव इत्यमाक्षीत्स चाब्रवीत् । युवा सुतं महापुण्यभागिनं चरमारकम् ॥ २३८ ॥ ऐसे पुरुष दान, पूजा, व्रत, उपवास आदिके द्वारा पुण्यबन्ध कर स्वर्गके सुख पाते हैं और संयम धारण कर मोक्षके सुख पाते हैं। यदि मिथ्या-दृष्टि जीव दानादि पुण्य करते हैं तो स्वर्ग-सम्बन्धी सुख प्राप्त करते हैं। वहाँ कितने ही मिथ्यादृष्टि जीव अपने शान्त परिणामोंके प्रभावसे कालादि लब्धियाँ पाकर स्वयमेव अथवा दूसरेके निमित्तसे समीचीन धर्मको प्राप्त होनेके योग्य हो जाते हैं। यह बात निकट कालमें मोक्ष प्राप्त करनेवाले मिध्यादृष्टि जीवोंकी है परन्तु जो तीव्र मिध्यादृष्टि निरन्तर भोगोंमें आसक्त रहकर हिंसा, झूठ, पर-धनहरण, पर-नारी-रमण, प्रारम्भ और परिग्रहके द्वारा पापका संचय करते हैं वे संसार-रूपी दुःखदायी कुएँ में गिरते हैं ।। २२२-२२६ ॥ इस प्रकार मुनिराजके वचन सुनकर बहुत लोगोंने धर्म धारण कर लिया। इसके पश्चात् सेठ सागरदराने अपनी,
आयकी अवधि पूछी सो मुनिराजने उसकी आयु तीस दिनकी बतलाई। यह सुनकर सेठने नगरमें प्रवेश किया और बड़े हर्षसे आष्टाह्निक पूजाकर अपना पद अपने बड़े पुत्रके लिए सौंप दिया। तदनन्तर समस्त भाई-बन्धुओंसे पूछकर उसने विधिपूर्वक बाईस दिनका संन्यास धारण किया और अन्त समयमें देव पद प्राप्त किया। किसी दूसरे दिन अनन्तानुबन्धी लोभसे प्रेरित हुए नागदत्राने कुबेरदत्तको बुलाकर दुर्भावनासे पूछा कि क्या पिताजी तुम्हें सारभूत-श्रेष्ठ धन दिखला गये हैं ? ॥ २२७-२३१ ।। 'यह तीव्र लोभसे आसक्त हो रहा है। ऐसा समझकर कुबेरदत्तने उत्तर दिया कि क्या पिताजीके पास अलगसे ऐसा कोई धन था जिसे हम दोनों नहीं जानते हों। वे विधिपूर्वक संन्यास धारण कर स्वर्ग गये हैं अत: उनपर दूषण लगाना बड़ा पाप है। भाई ! यह बात न तो तुझे कहनेके योग्य है और न मुझे सुननेके योग्य है। इस तरह कुबेरदत्तने नागदत्तकी सब दुर्बुद्धि दूर कर दी। सब धनका बाँट किया, अनेक चैत्य और चैत्यालय बनवाये, अनेक तरहकी जिनपूजाएँ की, तीनों प्रकारके पात्रोंके लिए भक्तिपूर्वक चार प्रकारका दान दिया। इस प्रकार जिनकी परस्परमें प्रीति बढ़ रही है ऐसे दोनों भाई सुखसे समय बिताने लगे। किसी एक दिन कुबेरदत्तने अपनी स्त्री, धन, मित्रोंके साथ सागरसेन मुनिराजके लिए शक्तिपूर्वक आहार दिया। आहार देनेके बाद नमस्कार कर उसने मुनिराजसे पूछा कि क्या कभी हम दोनों पुत्र लाभ करेंगे अथवा नहीं ? ॥२३२-२३७ ।। यदि नहीं करेंगे तो फिर हम दोनों जिन-दीक्षा धारण कर लें। इसके उत्तरमें

The Muni replied, "Twenty days." Hearing this, the merchant entered the city with great joy. ||228||
He performed the Ashtaahnika puja and handed over his position to his eldest son. Then, after consulting with all his relatives, he took the vow of renunciation for twenty-two days, and at the end of his life, he attained the divine state. ||229||
On another day, Nagadatta, driven by insatiable greed, called Kubera Datta and asked him with malice, "Did your father show you the most valuable treasure?" ||230||
Understanding that he was consumed by intense greed, Kubera Datta replied, "Did our father have any separate treasure that we were unaware of? He has gone to heaven after taking the vow of renunciation according to the scriptures. Therefore, it is a great sin to slander him. Brother, this is neither something you should say nor something I should hear." ||231-232||
Thus, Kubera Datta dispelled all the evil thoughts of Nagadatta. He divided all the wealth, built many temples and shrines, performed various types of Jin worship, and gave four types of charity to the three types of recipients with devotion. ||233-234||
In this way, the two brothers, filled with mutual affection, spent their time happily. One day, Kubera Datta, along with his wife, wealth, and friends, offered a powerful meal to the Muni Sagarsen. After offering the meal, he bowed down and asked the Muni, "Will we both ever have sons?" ||235-236||
"If not, then we will both take the vow of Jain initiation." ||237||
The Muni replied, "You, young man, are destined for great merit and will have a son who will be a great benefactor." ||238||
