महापुराणे उत्तरपुराणम् तमहोत्थापितात्युप्रग्यापन्माक्षिकभक्षितः। तत्ससेवा सुखं मत्वाकर्ट सर्वोऽपिजीवति॥ १.१॥ विधीविषयसंसको धीमानपि कथं तथा । वर्तते त्यत्तसङ्गः सबकुर्वन्तुर्वह सपा ॥१..॥ इत्याकणे वचस्तस्य माता कन्याश तस्करः । सनुसंसारभोगेषु यातारोऽतिविरागताम् ॥ १.८॥ तदा तमः समाधूय भासमानो दिवाकरः। योजयन् प्रियया कोक कुमारमिव दीक्षया ॥१९॥ करैनिजैः कुमारस्य मनो वास्पृश्य रअयन् । उद्यमस्तपसीवोच्चैः शिखरेऽनेरुदेण्यति।...॥ सर्वसन्तापकृत्तीक्ष्णकरः करोऽनवस्थितः । रविः कुवलयध्वंसी ब्रजिता कुनृपोपमाम् ॥११॥ नित्योदयो बुधाधीशो विशुद्धाखण्डमण्डलः। पनाहादी प्रवृदोष्मा सुराजानं स जेष्यति ॥११॥ शास्वा संसारवैमुख्यं कुमारस्यास्य बान्धवाः । तदा कुणिमहाराजः श्रेणयोऽष्टादशापि ॥५॥ सहानावृतदेवेन परिनिष्क्रमणं प्रति । अभिषेकं करिष्यन्ति साता मालैजलैः ॥१४॥
तत्कालोचितवेषोऽसौ शिविका देवनिर्मिताम् । भारुह्य भूतिभूत्योच्चैविपुलाचलमस्तके ॥१५॥ कर रहे थे। उसी वृक्षपर पुत्रादिक इष्ट पदार्थोसे उत्पन्न हुआ सुखरूपी मधुका रस टपक रहा था जिसे खानेके लिए वह बड़ा उत्सुक हो रहा था। उस मधु रसके चाटनेसे उड़ी हुई भयङ्कर आपत्तिरूपी मधुकी मक्खियाँ उसे काट रही थी परन्तु वह जीव मधु-बिन्दुओंके उस सेवनको सुख मान रहा था। इसी प्रकार संसारके समस्त प्राणी बड़े कष्टप्ले जीवन बिता रहे हैं। जो मर्ख हैं वे भले ही विषयोंमें आसक्त हो जायं परन्तु जो बुद्धिमान हैं वे क्यों ऐसी प्रवृत्ति करते हैं ? उन्हें तो सब परिग्रहका त्याग कर कठिन तपश्चरण करना चाहिये ।। १०२-१०७ ॥ जम्बूकुमारकी यह बात सुनकर उसकी माता, वे कन्याएं, और वह चोर सब, संसार शरीर और भोगोंसे विरक्त होंगे॥ १०८।। तदनन्तर चकवा को चकवीके समान कुमारको दीक्षाके साथ मिलाता हुआ अपनी किरणोंसे कुमारके मनको स्पर्शकर प्रसन्न करता हुआ, तपश्चरणके लिए श्रेष्ठ उद्यमके समान सब अन्धकारको नष्टकर उदयाचलकी शिखरपर सूर्य उदित होगा ॥ १०६-११०॥ उस समय वह सूर्य किसी अन्यायी राजाकी उपमा धारण करेगा क्योंकि जिस प्रकार अन्यायी राजा सर्व सन्तापकृत् होता है उसी प्रकार वह सूर्य भी सबको संताप करने वाला था, जिस प्रकार अन्यायी राजा तीक्ष्णकर होता है अर्थात कठोर टैक्स लगाता है उसी प्रकार वह सूर्य भी तीक्ष्णकर था अर्थात् उष्ण किरणोंका धारक था, जिस प्रकार अन्यायी राजा क्रूर अर्थात् निर्दय होता है उसी प्रकार वह सूर्य भी क्रूर अर्थात् अत्यन्त उष्ण था, जिस प्रकार अन्यायी राजा अनवस्थित रहता है-एक समान नहीं रहता है-कभी संतुष्ट रहता है और कभी असंतुष्ट रहता है उसी प्रकार वह सूर्य भी अनवस्थित था-एक जगह स्थिर नहीं रहता था और जिस प्रकार अन्यायी राजा कुवलयध्वंसी होता है अर्थात् पृथ्वी मण्डलको नष्ट कर देता है उसी प्रकार वह सूर्य भी कुवलयध्वंसी था अर्थात् नीलकमलोंको नष्ट करनेवाला था ।। १११ ।। अथवा वह सूर्य किसी उत्तम राजाको जीतनेवाला होगा क्योंकि जिस
मराजाका नित्यादय होता है अथात् उसका अभ्युदय निन्तर बढ़ता रहता है उसी प्रकार वह सूर्य भी नित्योदय होता है अर्थात् प्रतिदिन उसका उदय होता रहता है, जिस प्रकार उत्तम राजा बधाधीश होता है अर्थात् विद्वानोंका स्वामी होता है उसी प्रकार वह सूर्य भी बुधाधीश था अर्थात् बधग्रहका स्वामी था, जिस प्रकार उत्तम राजाका मण्डल अर्थात् देश विशुद्ध-शत्रुरहित और अखण्ड होता है उसी प्रकार सूर्यका मण्डल भी अर्थात् बिम्ब भी विशुद्ध और अखण्ड था, जिस प्रकार उत्तम राजा पद्माह्नादी होता है अर्थात् लक्ष्मीसे प्रसन्न रहता है उसी प्रकार सूर्य भी पद्माहादी था अर्थात् कमलोंको विकसित करनेवाला था और जिस प्रकार उत्तम राजा प्रवृद्धोष्मा होता है अर्थात बढ़ते हए अहंकारको धारण करता है उसी प्रकार वह सूर्य भी प्रवृद्धोष्मा था अर्थात् उसकी गर्मी निरन्तर बढती जाती थी ।। ११२ ।। जम्बूकुमार संसारसे विमुख-विरक्त हुआ है यह जान कर उसके म भाई-बन्धु, कुणिक राजा, उसकी अठारह प्रकारकी सेनाएं और अनावृत देव पायेंगे तथा सब लोग मालिक जलसे उसका दीक्षा-कल्याणकका अभिषेक करेंगे ॥११३-११४।। उस समयके योग्य वेषभषा धारण कर वह कुमार देव निर्मित पालकी पर सवार होकर बड़े वैभवके साथ विपुलाचन

Or, he will be like a victorious king, for just as a victorious king has a constant rise, that is, his rise continues to increase, so too will the sun have a constant rise, that is, he will rise every day. Just as a victorious king is the lord of the wise, that is, he is the master of the learned, so too will the sun be the lord of the wise, that is, he will be the master of the planets. Just as a victorious king's kingdom, that is, his country, is pure, free from enemies, and undivided, so too will the sun's kingdom, that is, his disc, be pure and undivided. Just as a victorious king is pleased with Lakshmi, so too will the sun be pleased with the lotuses, that is, he will cause them to bloom. And just as a victorious king has increasing pride, so too will the sun have increasing heat, that is, his heat will continue to increase. 1.12
