अवम्तिविषयं गत्वा विशालायाः श्मशानके। शूरसेनमवस्थाप्य शेषाश्चोरयितुं पुरम् ॥ २०८ ॥ प्राविशन्प्रकृतं तस्मिनिदमन्यदुपस्थितम् । तत्पुराधिपतिर्भूपो बभूव वृषभध्वजः ॥ २०९ ॥ भृत्यो दृढप्रहार्याख्यः स सहस्रभटः पटुः । वप्रश्रीरस्य जायाऽऽसीद्वज्रमुष्टिस्तयोः सुतः ॥ २० ॥ विमलायाः सुता मनी विमलेन्दुविशश्च सा। तत्प्रिया भूभुजा साद्धं वसन्ते वनमन्यदा ॥ २१ ॥ विहर्तमुद्यताः सर्वे तत्कालसुखलिप्सया । वप्रश्रीः सह मालाभिः कालाहिं कलशेऽक्षिपत् ॥ २१२ ॥ स्रषाभ्यसूयया कार्य नाम नास्ति हि योषिताम् । मङ्गी चोद्यानयानार्थं मालादानसमुद्यता ॥ २१३ ॥ दष्टा वसन्तकालोग्रविषेण विषभर्तृणा। विषव्याप्तशरीरत्वादस्पन्दाभूदसौ तदा ॥ २१४ ॥ पलालवा सावेष्ट्य स्रषां प्रेतवनेऽत्यजत् । वज्रमुष्टिवनक्रीडाविरामेऽभ्येत्य पृष्टवान् ॥ २१५॥ मङ्गी केस्याकुलो माताप्यसद्वाता न्यवेदयत् । सशोकः ससमुत्खातनिशातकरवालश्त् ॥ २१६ ॥ तामन्वेष्टुं व्रजनात्रौ श्मशाने योगमास्थितम् । वरधर्ममुनिं दृष्ट्रा नमद्भक्त्या कृताञ्जलिः ॥ २१७ ॥ यदि पूज्य प्रियां प्रेक्षे सहस्रदलवारिजैः । त्वां समभ्यर्चयिष्यामीत्याशास्य गतवांस्तदा ॥ २१८ ॥ वीक्षते स्म प्रियामीषचेतनां विषदूषिताम् । पलालवति मुक्त्वाशु समानीयान्तिकं मुनेः ॥ २१९ ॥ तेन तत्पादसंपर्शभेषजनाविषीकृता । सापि समः समुत्थाय प्रियस्य प्रीतिमातनोत् ॥ २२० ॥
गुरुप्रीतमनस्यस्मिन्नम्भोजार्थ गते सति । शूरसेनस्तदा सर्व तत्कर्मान्तहितो द्रुमैः ॥ २२१ ॥ - वीक्ष्य मङ्गयाः परीक्ष्यार्थ तदभ्यर्णमुपागतः । स्वाङ्गसन्दर्शनं कृत्वा मधुरालापचेष्टितैः ॥ २२२ ॥ ॥२०७ ॥ अब वे अवन्तिदेशमें पहुंचे और उज्जयिनी नगरीके श्मशानमें छोटे भाई शूरसेनका बैठा कर बाकी छह भाई चोरी करनेके लिए नगरीमें प्रविष्ट हए ॥ २०८॥ उन छहों भाइयोंके चले जानेपर उस श्मशानमें एक घटना और घटी जो कि इस प्रकार है-उस समय उज्जयिनीका राजा वृषभध्वज था, उसके एक दृढ़प्रहार नामका चतुर सहस्रभट योद्धा था, उसकी स्त्रीका नाम वप्रश्री था और उन दोनोंके वनमुष्टि नामका पुत्र था ।। २०६-२१०।। उसी नगरमें विमलचन्द्र सेठकी विमला खीसे उत्पन्न हुई मंगी नामकी पुत्री थी, वह यमुष्टिकी प्रिया हुई थी। किसी एक दिन वसन्त ऋतुमें उस समयका सुख प्राप्त करनेकी इच्छासे सब लोग राजाके साथ वनमें जानेके लिए तैयार हुए। मंगी भी जानेके लिए तैयार हुई । उसने मालाके लिए कलशमें हाथ डाला परन्तु उसकी सास वप्रश्रीने बहूकी ईासे एक काला साँप मालाके साथ उस कलशमें पहलेसे ही रख छोड़ा था सा ठीक ही है क्योंकि ऐसा कौन सा कार्य है जिसे स्त्रियाँ नहीं कर सकें॥२११-२१३ ।। वसन्त ऋतुके तीव्र विषवाले साँपने उस मंगीको हाथ डालते ही काट खाया जिससे उसके समस्त शरीरमें विष फैल गया और वह उसी समय निश्चेष्ट हो गई ॥ २१४ ॥ वपश्री, बहूको पयालसे लपेट कर श्मशानमें छोड़ आई। जब वनमुष्टि वनक्रीड़ा समाप्त होनेपर लौट कर आया तो उसने आकुल होकर अपनी माँ से पूछा कि मंगी कहाँ है ? माताने झूठमूठ कुछ उत्तर दिया परन्तु उससे वह संतुष्ट नहीं हुआ। मंगीके नहीं मिलनेसे वह बहुत दुःखी हुआ और नंगी तीक्ष्ण तलवार लेकर ढूँढनके लिए रात्रिमें ही चल पड़ा ॥२१५-२१६ ॥ उस समय श्मशानमें वरधर्म नामके मुनिराज योग धारण कर विराजमान थे । वनमुष्टिने भक्तिसे हाथ जोड़ कर उनके दर्शन किये और कहा कि हे पूज्य ! यदि मैं अपनी प्रियाको देख सकूँगा तो सहस्रदल वाले कमलोंसे आपकी पूजा करूँगा। ऐसी प्रतिज्ञा कर वनमुष्टि आगे गया। आगे चलकर उसने जिसे कुछ थोड़ी सी चेतना बाकी थी, ऐसी विषसे दूषित अपनी प्रिया देखी। वह शीघ्र ही पयाल हटाकर उसेमु निराजके समीप ले आया।।२१७२१६ ॥ और मुनिराजके चरण-कमलोंके स्पर्श रूपी ओषधिसे उसने उसे विषरहित कर लिया । मंगीने भी उठकर अपने पतिका आनन्द बढ़ाया ॥ २२०॥ तदनन्तर गुरुदेवके ऊपर जिसका मन अत्यन्त प्रसन्न है ऐसा वत्रमुष्टि इधर सहस्रदल कमल लानेके लिए चला गया। उधर वृक्षोंसे छिपा हुश्रा शूरसेन यह सब काम देख रहा था ।। २२१ ।। वह मंगीकी परीक्षा करनेके लिए उसके पास
