महापुराणे उत्तरपुराणम् अविद्भिरिव शास्त्रार्थ भवद्भिः श्रुतपारणैः । दुष्टानां निग्रहः शिष्टपालन भूभुजां मतम् ॥ १०९॥ नीतिशामेषु तत्स्नेहमोहासक्तिभयादिभिः । अस्माभिलडिते न्याये भवन्तस्तस्य वर्तकाः ॥१०॥ तस्मादयुक्तं युष्माकं मां योजयितुमुत्पथे । दुष्टो दक्षिणहस्तोऽपि स्वस्य छेद्यो महीभुजा ॥१११॥ कृस्याकृत्यविवेकातिदूरो मूढो महीभुजः । स साझ्यपुरुषस्तेन कृस्यं 'नानापरत्र च ॥११२॥ तस्मान प्रतिषेध्योऽहमिति राज्ञाभिभाषिते । पौरास्तदैव जानाति देव एवेत्ययुर्भयात् ॥११३॥ सुते नि:स्निग्धतां भर्तुर्जानन् देवाहमेव तम् । दण्डयिष्यामि मत्वेति निर्गम्य तदनुज्ञया ॥१४॥ प्राप्य स्वराज्यपुत्राभ्यां वनगिर्यद्रिमब्रवीत् | हे कुमार तवावश्यं मरणं समुपस्थितम् ॥ ११५॥. विभीः शक्नोषि किं 3मर्तुमित्यवादीत्स चेदृशम् । बिभेमि चेदहं मृत्योः किमित्येतदनुष्ठितम् ॥११॥ सलिलं वा तृषार्तस्य शीतलं मरणं मम । तत्र का भीरिति व्यक्तं तदुक्तमवबुध्य सः ॥ १७ ॥ नागरेभ्यो महीभ कुमारायात्मनेऽपि च । लोकद्वयहितं कार्य निश्रित्य सचिवाग्रणीः ॥ ११८॥ तदद्रिमस्तकं गत्वा महाबलगणेशिनम् । अभिवन्ध निजायातकार्य चास्मै न्यवेदयत् ॥ ११९॥ मनःपर्ययसंज्ञानचक्षुः स गणनायकः । मा भैषीद्वाविमौ रामकेशवाविह भाविनी ॥ २०॥ तृतीयजन्मनीत्याह तच्छू त्वा सचिवो मुदा तौ तत्रानीय संश्राम्य धर्म संयममापयत् ॥१२१
ततो भूपतिमासाद्य मन्त्रीतीदमबोधयत् । वारणारेरिवाभीरोरेककस्य गुहाश्रितः ॥ १२२॥ सामने खड़े हुए हैं ।। १०७ ॥ इसलिए हे महाराज ! हम प्रार्थना करते हैं कि हमलोंगोंका यह अपराध क्षमा कर दिया जाय। मंत्रीके यह बचन सुनकर राजाने कहा कि आपका कहना ठीक नहीं है। ऐसा जान पड़ता है कि आपलोग शास्त्र के पारगामी हो कर भी उसका अर्थ नहीं जानते हैं। दुष्टोंका निग्रह करना और सज्जनोंका पालन करना यह राजाओंका धर्म, नीतिशास्त्रोंमें बतलाया गया है। संह, मोह, आसक्ति तथा भय आदि कारणोंसे यदि हम ही इस नीतिमार्गका उल्लंघन करते हैं तो आप लोग उसकी प्रवृत्ति करने लग जावेंगे। इसलिए आप लोगोंका मुमे उन्मार्गमें लगाना अच्छा नहीं है। यदि अपना दाहिना हाथ भी दुष्ट-दोषपूर्ण हो जाय तो राजाको उसे भी काट डालना चाहिये । जो मूर्ख राजा करने योग्य और नहीं करने योग्य कार्यों के विवेकसे दूर रहता है वह सांख्यमतमें माने हुए पुरुषके समान है । उससे इस लोक और परलोक सम्बन्धी कोई भी कार्य सिद्ध नहीं हो सकता ।। १०८-११२ ।। इसलिए इस कार्यमें मुझे रोकना ठीक नहीं है। महाराजके इस प्रकार कहने पर लोगोंने समझा कि महाराज सब बात स्वयं जानते हैं ऐसा समझ सब लोग भयसे अपने-अपने घर चले गये ।। ११३ ॥ पुत्रपर महाराजका प्रेम नहीं है ऐसा जानते हुए मंत्रीने राजासे कहा कि हे देव ! मैं इसे दण्ड स्वयं दूंगा। इस प्रकार राजाकी आज्ञा लेकर मंत्री भी चला गया ॥ ११४ ॥ वह अपने पुत्र और राजपुत्रको साथ लेकर वनगिरि नामके पर्वत पर गया और वहाँ जाकर कुमारसे कहने लगा कि हे कुमार, अब अवश्य ही आपका मरण समीप आ गया है, क्या भाप निर्भय हो मरनेके लिए तैयार हैं? उत्तरमें राजकुमारने कहा कि यदि मैं
प्रकार डरता तो ऐसा कार्य ही क्यों करता। जिस प्रकार प्याससे पीडित मनुष्यके लिए ठण्डा पानी अच्छा लगता है उसी प्रकार मुझे भरण अच्छा लग रहा है इसमें भयकी कौनसी बात है? इस तरह कुमारकी बात सुनकर मुख्य मंत्रीने महाराज, राजकुमार और स्वयं अपने दोनों लोकोंका हित करने वाला कोई कार्य करनेका निश्चय किया ॥ ११५-११८॥ तदनन्तर मंत्रीने उसी पर्वतकी शिखापर जाकर महाबल नामके गणधरकी वन्दना की और उन्हें अपने आनेका सब कार्य भी निवेदन किया ॥११॥ मनःपर्यय ज्ञानरूपी नेत्रको धारण करने वाले उन गणधर महाराजने कहा कि तुम भयभीत मत हो, ये दोनों ही तीसरे भवमें इस भरतक्षेत्रके नारायण और बलभद्र होने वाले हैं ॥ १२०॥ यह सुनकर मंत्री उन्हें बड़ी प्रसन्नतासे घर ले आया और धर्म श्रवण कराकर उसने उन दोनोंको संयम धारण करा दिया ॥ १२१ ॥ तदनन्तर वह मन्त्री राजाके समीप आया और यह
