The Thirty-Eighth Chapter
247. After twelve days from the birth, on a day that is auspicious for the parents and the child, the naming ceremony is performed. [87] In this ceremony, according to one's means, one should worship the Arhant Devas and the Rishis, and honor the learned Brahmanas as well. One should choose a good name for the child, one that will bring prosperity to the family. [88] Or, one should choose a good name from the one thousand and eight names of the Jina Devas, using the method of the "Ghatapatra." [89]
Meaning: Write the one thousand and eight names of the Lord on one thousand and eight pieces of paper, using a golden pen or a pen made from pomegranate juice, and write the word "name" on another piece of paper. Make a ball of each piece of paper, and place them in a pot covered with a yellow cloth and a coconut. Then, have a young girl or boy draw one ball from each pot. The name on the ball that is drawn with the "name" ball is the name that should be given to the child. This is called the "Ghatapatra" method. [89] This is the seventh naming ceremony.
Then, after two or three months, or three or four months, on an auspicious day, one should perform the "Bahiryana" ceremony, with the sound of trumpets and other auspicious instruments, according to one's means. [90] On the day of this ceremony, the child should be taken out of the delivery room, and placed in the lap of the mother or the wet nurse. [91] At the time of this ceremony, whatever money is received from relatives and friends as gifts should be collected and given to the child when he becomes of age to inherit his father's property. [92] This is the eighth "Bahiryana" ceremony.
Then, the child should be seated on a mat spread out in a place where auspicious things are kept, and where the child is comfortable. [93] In this ceremony, one should worship the Siddha Bhagavans, and perform all the rituals as before, so that the child may be worthy of sitting on a divine seat in the future.
