The Thirty-Sixth Chapter
Contemplating the impermanence, homelessness, transmigration, oneness, otherness, impurity, inflow, restraint, stoppage, world, the rarity of enlightenment, and the declaration of Dharma, he contemplated these twelve aspects with a pure mind. ||15|| Contemplating the command, downfall, fruition, and establishment, he practiced Dharma-meditation, diminishing the karmic particles. ||16|| Just as the particles of soot are seen around a burning lamp, so too, the karmic particles were seen for a moment, being destroyed around his meditation-lamp. ||162|| His body's radiance, spreading in all directions, made the forest appear as if it were filled with the brilliance of sapphires. ||163|| The deer and other animals, resting near his feet, were always fearless, for even the cruel lions and other vicious creatures never harmed them, as they themselves became peaceful upon arriving there. ||164|| Even the opposing creatures like elephants and lions, near his feet, abandoned their mutual animosity and moved about as they pleased, thus indicating the magnificence of the sage. ||165|| A lioness, smelling the head of a calf born to a cow, considered it her own child and fed it her milk. ||166|| Elephants, along with their herds of flies, followed behind the lions, and the lion cubs, eager to suckle, approached the she-elephants. ||167|| The lion, with his sharp claws, touched the necks of the young elephants, who were making sweet sounds due to their youth, and the elephant leaders were very pleased with him, welcoming him. ||168|| The she-elephants, desiring to clean the ground near the sage's meditation seat, brought water in lotus-leaf bowls. ||169|| They placed the lotuses, lifted by their trunks, at his two feet, thus worshipping him. Oh, what a peaceful austerity! ||170|| The sage, who was adorned with the ornaments of the world, was pleased with the blue lotuses, which were arranged for his worship. ||171||
