.सतोऽमी श्रुतनिःशेषश्रुतार्थाः श्रुतचक्षुषः । श्रुतार्थभावनोत्कर्षाद् दधुः शुद्धि तपोविधौ ॥१४८॥ वाग्देव्या सममालापो मया मौनमनारतम् । इतीर्यतीव सन्तापं व्यधतैषु तपःक्रिया ॥१४६॥ तनुतापमसह्यं ते सहमानाः मनस्विनः । बाह्यमाध्यात्मिकं चोग्रं तपः सुचिरमाचरन् ॥१५०॥ ग्रीष्मेऽर्ककरसन्तापं सहमानाः सुदुःसहम् । ते भेजुरातपस्थानम् प्रारूढगिरिमस्तकाः ॥१५१॥ शिलातलेषु तप्तेषु निवेशितपदद्वयाः । प्रलम्बितभुजास्तस्थुगिर्यग्रगावगोचरे ॥१५२॥ तप्तपांशुचिता भूमिः दावदग्धा वनस्थली । याता जलाशयाः शोषं दिशो धूमान्धकारिताः ॥१५३॥ इत्यत्युग्रतर ग्रीष्मे संप्लुष्ट गिरिकानने । तस्थुरातपयोगेन ते सोढजरठातपाः ॥१५४॥ मेघान्धकारिता शेषदिक्चक्रे जलदागमे । योगिनो गमयन्ति स्म तरुमलेषु शर्वरीः ॥१५॥ मुसलस्थूलधाराभिः वर्षत्सु जलवाहिषु' । निशामनेषुर"व्यथ्या वार्षिकी ते महर्षयः ॥१५६॥ ध्यानगर्भ गहान्तःस्था धृतिप्रावारसंवृताः । सहन्ते स्म महासत्त्वास्ते घनाघनदिनम् ॥१५७॥ ४ ते हिमानी परिक्लिष्टां तनुष्टि हिमागमे । दधुरभ्यवकाशेषु शयाना मौनमास्थिताः ॥१५८॥
"अनग्नमुषिता एव नग्नास्तेऽनग्निसेविनः। धृतिसंमित रङगैः सेहिरे हिममारुतान् ॥१५॥
किया था ॥१४७।। तदनन्तर जिन्होंने समस्त श्रुतके अर्थोंका श्रवण किया है और श्रुतज्ञान ही जिनके नेत्र हैं ऐसे वे मुनि श्रुतज्ञानकी भावनाके उत्कर्षसे तपश्चरणमें विशुद्धता धारण करने लगे ॥१४८। ये लोग सरस्वती देवीके साथ तो बातचीत करते हैं और मेरे साथ निरन्तर मौन धारण करते हैं इस प्रकार ईर्ष्या करती हुईके समान तपश्चरणकी क्रिया उन्हें बहुत संताप देती थी ॥१४९॥ असहय कायक्लेश सहन करते हुए वे तेजस्वी मुनि अतिशय कठिन अन्तरङ्ग और बाहय दोनों प्रकारका तप चिरकाल तक करते रहे ।।१५। ग्रीष्मऋतुम पर्वतोंके शिखरपर आरूढ़ होकर अत्यन्त असह्य सूर्य की किरणोंके संतापको सहन करते हुए वे आतापन योगको प्राप्त हुए थे अर्थात् धूपमें बैठकर तपस्या करते थे ।।१५१।। पर्वतोंके अग्रभागकी चट्टानोंकी तपी हुई शिलाओंपर दोनों पैर रखकर तथा दोनों भुजाएं लटका कर खड़े होते थे ॥१५२॥ जिस ग्रीष्मऋतुमें पृथिवी तपी हुई लिसे व्याप्त हो रही है, वनके सब प्रदेश दावानलसे जल गये हैं, तालाब सूख गये हैं और दिशाएं धांसे अन्धकारपूर्ण हो रही है इस प्रकारके अत्यन्त कठिन और जिसमें पर्वतोंके वन जल गये हैं ऐसी ग्रीष्मऋतुमें तीव्र संताप सहन करते हए वे मनिराज आतापन योग धारण कर खड़े होते थे ॥१५३-१५४।। जिसमें समस्त दिशाओंका समूह बादलोंके छा जानेसे अन्धकारयुक्त हो गया है ऐसी वर्षाऋतु में वे योगी वृक्षों के नीचे ही अपनी रात्रियाँ बिता देते थे ॥१५५।। जब बादल मूसलके समान मोटी मोटी धाराओंसे पानी बरसाते थे तब वे महर्षि वर्षाऋतुकी उन रात्रियोंको निश्चल होकर व्यतीत करते थे ।।१५६॥ ध्यानरूपी गर्भगृहके भीतर स्थित और धैर्यरूपी ओढ़नी को ओढे हुए वे महाबलवान् मुनि बादलोंसे ढके हुए दुर्दिनोंको सहन करते थे ।।१५७।। शीतऋतुके दिनोंमें मौन धारण कर खुले आकाशमें शयन करते हुए वे मुनि बहुत भारी बर्फसे अत्यन्त दुःखी हुई अपने शरीरको लकड़ीके समान निश्चल धारण करते थे ॥१५८॥ वे मुनि नग्न होकर भी कभी अग्निसेवन नहीं करते थे, वस्त्रोंसे सहित हुए के समान सदा निर्द्वन्द्व रहते थे

They stood with both feet placed on the heated stones of the mountain peaks, with their arms hanging down, in the open space of the mountain. ||152||
The earth was covered with hot dust, the forest land was burnt by fire, the water bodies were dried up, and the directions were filled with smoke and darkness. ||153||
Thus, in the most intense summer, when the forests on the mountains were scorched, those steadfast ones stood there, enduring the intense heat, practicing sun-bathing. ||154||
When the sky was darkened by clouds, and the rain clouds arrived, the yogis used to spend their nights under the trees. ||155||
When the rain clouds poured down water in thick streams like pestles, those great sages spent those rainy nights without any disturbance. ||156||
Residing within the womb of meditation, covered with the cloak of fortitude, those mighty ones endured the days covered with clouds. ||157||
In the arrival of snow, they endured their bodies, which were tormented by the cold, and lay down in secluded places, maintaining silence. ||158||
They, who were not fire-worshippers, lived without fire, and they, who were naked, were like those who were clothed, adorned with the armor of fortitude, and endured the cold winds. ||159||
