The Thirty-First Chapter
The glorious one, eager to conquer the Kuber-like (wealthy) enemy, set out with his army, which was abundant in horses, and filled the directions with his forces. ||1||
Those who knew the qualities of horses recognized their speed by the term "Dhaurita," their strength by their enthusiasm, their training by their lightness, and their breed by their physical attributes. ||2||
"Dhaurita" refers to the skill in movement, "Paraakrama" to enthusiasm, "Shiksha" to discipline, and the brilliance of the hair to the quality of the body. ||3||
The horses, eager to conquer the front, were moving so fast that it seemed as if their hindquarters were overtaking their forequarters. ||4||
Some of the great horses, displaying their prowess, were crossing the path, fearing that the dust raised by their hooves might touch their own bodies. ||5||
Some could not bear to have their shadow move with them, so they seemed to be breaking it with their hooves, but due to its subtlety, the shadow remained unaffected. ||6||
Some horses seemed to be dancing on the earth, like a stage, with their feet, as if accompanying the sound of drums and other instruments at the beginning of their journey. ||7||
The horses, whose nature and strength were stable, but who had dug up the earth with their moving hooves, were restless only in their movement, not otherwise. ||8||
The number of horses belonging to the Chakravarti, who were swift like the wind, of the best breed, and worthy, was eighteen crore. ||9||
The flag, which had stopped the forests on the banks, which had stopped the earth on the banks, was moving towards the river, facing its current. ||10||
