It fulfils a great want long felt by all Jain scholars interested in philosophy." In his letter, dated the 21st June 1927, he observes: -- "Your request to write a Foreword to the Tattvārthādhigamasūtra puts me at a great inconvenience, as I am overburdened with work through which I can hardly get, especially at my advanced age. Besides, I do not know what I should write in a Foreword of mine, since all that can be said has been so well said already by the editor." Dr. Johannes Hertel, Professor of Sanskrit in the University of Leipzig makes the following remark in his letter of the 23rd August 1927:· "I must congratulate you as well as Prof. Kapadia on publishing this magnificent edition of this highly interesting and importing Sūtra together with the gloss and the commentary and I hope that you will soon be able to publish the 2nd part as well." “This new edition of Umāsvāti's work, so carefully established by you, is valuable to the greatest degree, because it contains the excellent con of Siddhasenagani, that was hitherto properly unknown to western scholars, a short extract from it having been only printed by the late Prof. P. Peterson in his third report. Both the introductions, Sanskrit and English by Prof. Kapadia, when once completed by the second part at the end of the book, will be verily exhaustive, and according to my opinion a preface or Foreword by a Euro ned man becomes indeed neither necessary nor useful. Be pleased to believe that native men like Mr. K. P. Mody or Prof. Kapadia and others have really the same authority as any European one, Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
