Indian Philosophy and Gunaratna's commentary, a lucid exposition of the same. F. HALL noticed Şaddarśanasamuccaya and its Vștti by Caritrasithhagani in his A Contribution towards an Index to the Bibliography of the Indian Philosophical Systems, Calcutta 1859. Then F. L. PULLB collected some information about Haribhadra and continued his study of the text and its commentary ( Giornale della Societa asiatica italiana, Vol. I, pp. 47-73, vol. VIII, pp. 159-177, vol. IX. pp. 1-32, vol. XII. pp. 225-36, Florenze, 1887, 1895-96-99). L. SUALI presented an Italian Translation of a portion of it in the above Journal of the Asiatic Society of Italy, vol. XVII, pp. 243-71, Firenze 1904; and later he edited the Text with Gunaratna's commentary in Bibliotheca Indica, Calcutta 1905. Lately, Dr. K. S. MURTHY has translated this text into English with notes and published under the title A Compendium of Six Philosophies, Tagore Publishing House, Tenali 1957.
The late lamented Pt. MAHENDRAKUMAR was one of the few gifted scholars who gave us model editions of many Jaina works on Nyāya, such as, Nyayaviniscayavivarana, vols. I & II, Rajavarttikm, vols. I & II, Siddhiviniscaya vols. I & II, which are published in this Series. He also edited the Akalanka-granthatrayam in the Singhi J. Series, Bombay 1939, the Nyayakumudacandra for the Mānikachandra D. J. Granthamālā, Bombay 1941 and the Prameyakamalamartanda for the Nirnaya Sāgara Press, Bombay 1941. These editions show his deep understanding of difficult texts; and he had evolved, under the inspiration of Pt. SUKHALALAJI, a technique of giving comparative notes which bore witness to his wide reading of the Indian Nyaya literature as a whole. On hearing about his sad demise, Prof. Dr. E, FRAUWALLNER, Austria, wrote to me about him thus (his letter of 7-3-1960 ) : 'The death of Pt. MAHENDRAKUMAR is a heavy loss for Jainology. He was a good scholar of amazing learning.'
The General Editors are very happy to bring to light this edition of the Şaddarśanasamuccaya ( accompanied by the commentaries of Gunaratna and Somatilakam and an anonymous Avacūrpi ) by the late lamented Pt. MAHENDRAKUMAR along with his Hindi Translation. Pt. DALASUKH MALAVANIYA retouched Pt. MAHENDRAKUMAR's material for the press and greatly helped towards its publication in the present form. He has also contributed a learned Introduction in Hindi. It is a matter of satisfaction that this work of our common friend, the late Pt. MAHENDRAKUMAR, is now being published in a suitable manner in the Series to the initial growth of which he had lent his hand.
We record our gratitude to Shriman Sahu SHANTI PRASADJI and his enlightened wife, Smt. RAMAJI, for their keen interest in the progress of this Granthamāla and for their generous patronage to the publication of such works. We are grateful to Pt. DALASUKH MALAVANIYA for his generous help and ungrudging cooperation. Our thanks are due to Shri L. C. JAIN for his zealous guidance and also to Dr. G.C. JAIN who helped this publication in more than one way, especially by compiling the Indices etc. Kolhapur :
