It is believed that Dharmasuri flourished in Virasamvat 392-495. Siddhasena Divakara Suri is mentioned as his pupil too, in 'vicarasreni while nothing that Khaputa Suri. Vrddhavadin Suri etc. flourished during the life time of this venerable Suri (Dharma).
For the guru of Siddhasena Suri, two names are mentioned (i) Vrddhavadin Suri and (ii) Dharma Suri, though so far as we know, Siddhasena Suri has mentioned neither of them as his guru. If we have to reconcile the dates of these two Suris we may have to accept that vrddhavadin Suri is a contemporary of Dharma Suri. If this cornes true, there is no harm in believing that (1) the guru of vraddhavadin is Skandila Suri, (i) and none else, and (ii) Siddhasena Divakara is a contemporary of Vikrama. We point out another valid proof in this connection. It is that Siddhasena Divakara must have composed some grammer, Its name was Ksaparuaka'. Siddhasena suri was one of the scholars who flourished in the time of Vikrama, and he is refferred to as "Ksapanaka' by other authors. In Jyotirvidabharava composed by Kalidasa it is said :
"traraft: 207S ATTENETE : 1 aash-297f-riserer : " "ख्यातोवराहमिहिरो नृपतेः सभायां रत्नानि वै वररुचिर्नव विक्रमस्य ॥” २०-१०
The connection between Vikrama' and Divakara Suri is very well deferred to in Jaina works. That Siddhasena Divakara Suri has written even a commeritary on his own grammar Ksapanaka', is borne out by the following lines occuring in a Maitreyaraksitatantrapradipa :
अत एव नावमात्मानं मन्यते इति विग्रहपरत्वादनेन ह्रस्वत्वं बाधिवा अमागमे सति नावं मन्ये इति क्षपणकव्याकरणे'
Moreover, it is distinctly stated in 'Unadivrth' composed by Ujjvaladatta as under :
"क्षपणकवृत्तौ अत्र इति शब्द आद्यर्थे व्याख्यातः इति ।" In Jainandra grammar too Siddhasena's opinion with grammar is gouoted as - Page Even in this Nayacakra we come across the following sentences :'भस्ति भवति विद्यति पद्यति वर्ततयः सन्निपातषष्ठाः सप्ताथाः' 'तथा चाचार्यसिद्धसेन आह-'यत्र हि अर्थों वाचं व्यभिचरति नाभिधानं तत् ।'
From these sentences pertaining to grammar it follows that Divakara Suri must have Composed grammar and that grammar must have been named as Ksapanaka'. As this grammar comes from the pen of Ksapanaka, his grammar may have been.
1 Historians are not unamious as to who this vikrama is
Pt. Nathuram Premi is reluctant to believe that this Suri has composed a grammar, But an opinion of an 'acarya' pertaining to a grammatical topic, is cited only when he has composed some independent grammar, e. g. 'puniksu' noted while citing the opinion of Anubhuti svarupacarya.' He has shown validity of this form in his grammar and hence his opinion is cited. Even other opinion of Divakara Suri pertaining to grammar are noted in this work So there seems to be no ground to doubt the fact that the author of Ksapanaka grammar is Siddsena Divakara Suri.
The name of Nayavatara is mentioned just along with Sammati. So the author of both of them is one and the same person.
This Siddhasena Suri may be one mentioned in Nisithacurni (Nisihavisesacunni) etc.
