બૃહદ્ અવચૂરિના કર્તાની મુંઝવણનો ઉકેલ સુયોગ્ય અવસરે પ્રાપ્ત થશે તે વિશ્વાસ સાથે સંશોધનનું કામ પ્રારંવ્યું. મુનિરાજ શ્રી ધર્મરત્ન વિ.મ.એ કરેલ અને મોકલેલ પ્રેસ કોપીને ફરીથી મૂળપ્રતો સાથે મેળવવાનું શરૂ કર્યું. મૂળપ્રતોમાં અશુદ્ધિઓ અને અધુરાશનું પ્રાચુર્ય હતું. સંસ્કૃત ભાષાથી અપરિચિત કે અલ્પપરિચિત લહીયાઓના હાથે લખાયેલી આ પ્રતો દ્વારા વાક્યોના અન્વય ગોઠવવામાં પણ ઘણી મહેનત કરવાની થઈ. જે પ્રતમાં જે પાઠ સંપૂર્ણ હતો તેમાંથી તે પાઠ અને જે પ્રતોમાં જે પાઠ શુદ્ધ હતો તેમાંથી તે પાઠનો સ્વીકાર કર્યો. તે સિવાયના અશુદ્ધ અને અપૂર્ણ પાઠો અમર્યાદિત જણાતા તેના પાઠાન્તરો, ટિપ્પણીઓનું કામ મૂલત્વી રાખીને શક્ય શુદ્ધિપૂર્વક પ્રેસ કોપી તૈયાર કરી.
બંને અવચૂરિના સંશોધન માટે મુખ્ય ચાર-ચાર પ્રતોને આદર્શ તરીકે બનાવી. પૂજ્ય આચાર્ય શ્રી ગુણરત્નસૂરિ મહારાજાની સંક્ષિપ્ત અવસૂરિ પંડિત હીરાલાલ હંસરાજ જામનગરવાળાએ વિ.સં. ૧૯૭૯માં વિવિધ પયપન્નાવસૂરિના નામે છપાવીને પ્રસિદ્ધ કરેલ છે. તે પછી અનેક સંસ્થાઓ દ્વારા પણ પ્રકાશિત થયેલ છે. તે પ્રકાશિત પ્રતો સાથે પણ સંક્ષિપ્ત અવચૂરિ મેળવવાની થઈ.
સંશોધનમાંથી સંપાદનની દિશામાં આગળ વધતાં બૃહદ્ અવચૂરિના કર્તાનો નિર્ણય કરવા જરૂરી તપાસ જારી હતી. તે તપાસ અંતર્ગત પૂના-ભાંડારકર ઓરિએન્ટલ રીસર્ચ ઈન્સ્ટીટ્યૂટનું હસ્તલિખિત પ્રતોનું લીસ્ટ જોવાનું થયું. તેમાં આતુર પ્રત્યાખ્યાનમાં એક પ્રતના આદ્ય-અંત શબ્દો અપરિચિત અને જુદી દિશામાં જતા જણાયા. એ શબ્દો જોતાં પ્રસ્તુત બે અવચૂરિથી અલગ આ વિવરણ છે. તેના મંગલાચરણના શ્લોકો અને અંતે પ્રશસ્તિના શ્લોકો જોતાં પૂ.આ.ભુવનતુંગસૂરિ મ.નુ નામ ઉપલબ્ધ થયું. આનંદની અનુભૂતિ સાથે પૂના તપાસ કરાવી ત્યાં તે પ્રતની ઝેરોક્ષ કોપી મંગાવી. તે ઝેરોક્ષ કોપી લાંબા સમયે પ્રાપ્ત થઈ. છતાં પ્રાપ્ત થયાનો આનંદ હતો. તે સંપૂર્ણ વ્યાખ્યાને જોવાની થઈ. અનેક દૃષ્ટિકોણથી આ વ્યાખ્યા બંને અવચૂરિ કરતાં અલગ જ હતી. એક બાજુ તેનું લીપ્યુતર કરવાનું કામ કર્યું. બીજી બાજુ તેની બીજી પ્રતિકૃતિ મેળવવા તપાસ કરી. લીખંતર થયું. પણ બીજી હસ્તલિખિત પ્રત ન મળી. જે આજ સુધી પ્રાપ્ત થયેલ નથી. - આ વ્યાખ્યાને વૃત્તિ તરીકે સ્વીકારીને પ્રકાશિત કરવાનો નિર્ણય કર્યો. આ વૃત્તિના અંતમાં પૂ.આ.શ્રી ભુવનતુંગસૂરીશ્વરજી મ.સા.ની પ્રશસ્તિ સંપૂર્ણ સ્પષ્ટ હોવાથી આ કૃતિ તેઓશ્રીમની જ છે. તેવું સ્પષ્ટ થયું. સાથો સાથ રૂટું અધ્યયનં રૂપ બૃહદ્ અવસૂરિ પૂ.આ.શ્રી સોમસુન્દરસૂરીશ્વરજી મહારાજાની કૃતિ તરીકે સ્વીકારી. આ નિર્ણય વર્તમાન ઉપલબ્ધ સાહિત્યના આધારે કર્યો છે. સાહિત્ય સંપાદન-સંશોધનની દિશામાં આગળ વધેલા વિદ્વાનોને ભવિષ્યમાં અન્ય કોઈ પ્રત પ્રાપ્ત થાય અથવા કર્તાના નિર્ણય માટે અન્ય કોઈ નિશ્ચિત પરિબળ પ્રાપ્ત થાય તો ચોક્કસ વિચારણા કરવાનું વિચાર્યું છે.
