सचित्र उत्तराध्ययन सूत्र
गति (गमन क्रिया में उदासीन हेतुता) धर्मद्रव्य का लक्षण है, स्थिति (ठहरने में उदासीन हेतुत्व) अधर्मद्रव्य का लक्षण है, सभी द्रव्यों का आधार (भाजन) बनना - अवगाह देना आकाशद्रव्य का लक्षण है ॥ ९ ॥
[355] अष्टाविंश अध्ययन
The characteristic of Motion-entity is movement (unprompted cause or facilitating factor of movement), that of Inertia-entity is rest (unprompted cause or facilitating factor of rest), and that of Space-entity is to be base of all entities or to provide space to be occupied by all substances. (9)
वत्तणालक्खणो कालो, जीवो उवओगलक्खणो । नाणेणं दंसणेणं च, सुहेण य दुहेण य॥१०॥
वर्तना (परिवर्तन) कालद्रव्य का लक्षण है। उपयोग (चेतना) जीवद्रव्य का लक्षण है जो ज्ञान (विशेष अवबोध), दर्शन ( सामान्य अवबोध) तथा सुख और दुःख की अनुभूति से पहचाना जाता है ॥ १० ॥
The characteristic of Time-entity is to flow (provide yardstick of change); that of Soul-entity is conation or consciousness that is recognized by knowledge, awareness and experiencing pleasure and pain. (10)
नाणं च दंसणं चेव, चरित्तं च तवो तहा ।
वीरियं वओगो य, एयं जीवस्स लक्खणं ॥ ११ ॥
ज्ञान, दर्शन, चारित्र, तप, वीर्य और उपयोग - ये जीव के लक्षण हैं ॥ ११॥
Knowledge, perception / faith, conduct, austerities, potency and conation (consciousness) are the characteristics of Soul-entity. (11)
सद्दऽन्धयार - उज्जोओ पहा छायाऽऽतवे इ वा ।
वण्ण-रस- गन्ध- फासा, पुग्गलाणं तु लक्खणं ॥ १२ ॥
शब्द, अन्धकार, उद्योत, प्रभा, छाया, आतप आदि तथा वर्ण, रस, गन्ध और स्पर्श-ये पुद्गल लक्षण हैं ॥ १२ ॥

The characteristics of Matter-entity include sound, darkness, light, glow, shadow and heat as also properties including colour, taste, smell and touch. (12)
एगत्तं च पुहत्तं च संखा संठाणमेव य । संजोगाय विभागाय, पज्जवाणं तु लक्खणं ॥ १३ ॥
एकत्व, पृथक्त्व, संख्या, संस्थान- आकार, संयोग और विभाग - ये सब पर्यायों के लक्षण हैं ॥ १३ ॥ The characteristics of modes are unity (sameness), diversity (variety), number, form or shape, assimilation and division. (13)
जीवाजीवा य बन्धो य, पुण्णं पावासवो तहा । संवरो निज्जरा मोक्खो, सन्तेए तहिया नव ॥ १४ ॥
