[321] पंचविंश अध्ययन
सचित्र उत्तराध्ययन सूत्र
We call that person a Brahmin who is worshipped like fire and is called Brahmin by the worthy. (19) .
जो न सज्जइ आगन्तुं, पव्वयन्तो न सोयई।
रमए अज्जवयणमि, तं वयं बूम माहणं ॥२०॥ जो स्वजन आदि प्रियजनों के आने पर आसक्त (प्रसन्न) नहीं होता और उनके चले जाने पर शोक नहीं करता, आर्य वचनों में (अर्हद्वाणी में) रमण करता है, उसे हम ब्राह्मण कहते हैं॥ २०॥
One who is neither elated when dear ones arrive nor sad when they depart and takes delight in noble words (of Arhats) we call him a Brahmin. (20)
जायरूवं जहामठे, निद्धन्तमलपावगं।
राग-द्दोस-भयाईयं, तं वयं बूम माहणं ॥२१॥ कसौटी पर कसे हुए और अग्नि में तपाकर शुद्ध किये हुए स्वर्ण के समान जो निर्मल और तेजस्वी है तथा राग, द्वेष और भय से रहित है, उसे हम ब्राह्मण कहते हैं ॥ २१ ॥
One who is pure and shining like the gold tested by touchstone and purified by melting in fire and is free from attachment, aversion and fear, we call him a Brahmin. (21)
तवस्सियं किसं दन्तं, अवचियमंस-सोणियं।
सुव्वयं पत्तनिव्वाणं, तं वयं बूम माहणं ॥२२॥ जो तपस्वी. होने से कृश है, जितेन्द्रिय है, जिसके शरीर का रक्त और माँस तपस्या के कारण कम हो गया है, जो सुव्रती है, शांत है, उसे हम ब्राह्मण कहते हैं॥ २२॥
One who is lean due to austerities, victor of senses, whose flesh and blood has been toned down by austerities, observer of noble vows and serene, we call him a Brahmin. (22).
तसपाणे वियाणेत्ता, संगहेण य थावरे।
जो न हिंसइ तिविहेणं, तं वयं बूम माहणं ॥२३॥ जो त्रस और स्थावरं प्राणियों को भली प्रकार जानकर मन-वचन-काय से उनकी हिंसा नहीं करता, उसे हम ब्राह्मण कहते हैं ॥ २३॥
One who does not intentionally hurt mobile and immobile beings through mind, speech and body, we call him a Brahmin. (23)
कोहा वा जइ वा हासा, लोहा वा जइ वा भया।
मुसं न वयई जो उ, तं वयं बूम माहणं ॥२४॥ जो क्रोध से, हास्य से, लोभ से अथवा भय से मृषा (झूठ) नहीं बोलता, उसे हम बाह्मण कहते हैं॥ २४॥
