सचित्र उत्तराध्ययन सूत्र
The aspirant who, for livelihood, does not employ any form of augury or divination including chhinna-vidya (from cuts and shreds of dress or pots), svar (from sound), bhaum (from vibrations of earth), antariksha ( from sky or space; astrology), svapna (dream divining), lakshan (from signs, marks, diagrams etc.), dand (from stick ), vaastu (from architecture), anga-vikaar (from body deformations) and svara-vijnana (from inhalation and exhalation) is a true ascetic. (7)
[177] पञ्चदश अध्ययन
मन्तं मूलं विविहं वेज्जचिन्तं वमणविरेयणधूमणेत्त - सिणाणं । आउरे सरणं तिगिच्छियं च तं परिन्नाय परिव्वए स भिक्खू ॥ ८ ॥
जो रोग आदि से ग्रसित होने पर भी मंत्र, जड़ी-बूटी आदि तथा वमन, विरेचन, धूम्रपान की नली, स्नान और स्वजनों की शरण एवं चिकित्सा का त्याग कर देता है तथा अप्रतिबद्ध विहार है; वह भिक्षु है ॥ ८ ॥
He who avoids use of mantras (charms and spells), herbs and other medicines, vomiting, purgative, fumigation, bath, help of family members and medical or other treatment, even when inflicted by disease or other ailment and continues his itinerant way undaunted is a true ascetic. (8)
खत्तियगणउग्गरायपुत्ता, माहणभोइयविविहा य सिप्पिणो ।
नो सिं वयइ सिलोगपूयं तं परिन्नाय परिव्वए स भिक्खू ॥ ९ ॥
क्षत्रिय, गण, उग्र, राजपुत्र, ब्राह्मण, भोगिक - सामन्त आदि तथा अनेक प्रकार के शिल्पियों की प्रशंसा में कभी एक शब्द भी नहीं बोलता अपितु इसे हेय समझता है; वह भिक्षु है ॥ ९ ॥
One who does not utter even a word in praise of kshatriya (of martial clan), gana (chieftains), ugra ( security officers), rajaputra ( princes), Brahmins, bhogik (ministers) and different type of artisans, but considers it (praise) to be disconcerting is true ascetic. (9)
गिहिणो जे पव्वइएण दिट्ठा, अप्पव्वइएण व संथुया हविज्जा ।
सिं इहलोइयफलट्ठा, जो संथवं न करेइ स भिक्खू ॥ १० ॥
प्रव्रजित होने के बाद अथवा पहले के परिचित व्यक्तियों के साथ इस लोक के फल प्राप्ति हेतु जो संपर्क-मेलजोल नहीं रखता; वह भिक्षु है ॥ १० ॥
He who does not maintain contact with people acquainted before or after his initiation for any earthly gains is a true ascetic. (10)
सयणासण-पाण-भोयणं, विविहं खाइमं साइमं परेसिं । अदए पडिसेहिए नियण्ठे, जे तत्थ न पउस्सई स भिक्खू ॥ ११ ॥
शयन, आसन, पान, भोजन तथा अनेक प्रकार के खाद्य और स्वाद्य पदार्थ कोई (गृहस्थ) स्वयं न दे अथवा माँगने पर भी न दे, इन्कार कर दे, उस व्यक्ति पर क्रोध - द्वेष न करने वाला निर्ग्रन्थ ही भिक्षु है ॥ ११ ॥
