सचित्र उत्तराध्ययन सूत्र
अज्ञानी तपस्वी एक-एक मास की तपस्या करके पारणे में कुशाग्र-कुश की नोंक पर आये उतना ही भोजन करता है उसका वह घोर तप भी सु-आख्यात- तीर्थंकरों द्वारा प्ररूपित श्रमण धर्म की तुलना 'में सोलहवीं कला - अंश के बराबर भी नहीं है ॥ ४४ ॥
[95 ] नवम अध्ययन
The harsh penance of an ignorant hermit, who observes a month long fast and breaks his fast with so meager a quantity of food that it can rest on the tip of grass, does not equal the sixteenth part of the Shraman Dharma (ascetic order) propagated by Tirthankaras. (44)
एयमट्ठ निसामित्ता, हेऊकारण चोइओ ।
तओ नमिं रायरिसिं, देविन्दो इणमब्बवी - ॥ ४५ ॥
राजर्षि का यह अर्थ सुनकर तथा हेतु कारण से प्रेरित देवेन्द्र ने उनसे कहा- ॥ ४५ ॥ Hearing sage Nami's answer, the king of gods, on the basis of his reason and logic, spoke thus to the sage- (45)
'हिरण्णं सुवण्णं मणिमुत्तं, कंसं दूसं च वाहणं । कोसं वड्ढावइत्ताणं, तओ गच्छसि खत्तिया ! ' ॥ ४६ ॥
हे क्षत्रिय ! चाँदी, सोना, मणि, मोती, काँसे के बर्तन, वस्त्र, वाहन तथा कोष को बढ़ाकर उसके उपरान्त प्रव्रजित होना ॥ ४६ ॥
O Kshatriya! Multiply the stock of your silver, gold, gems, pearls, bronze (utensils), dresses, vehicles and treasure and then only you get initiated. (46)
एयमट्ठ निसामित्ता, हेऊकारण- चोइओ ।
ओ नमी रायरसी, देविन्दं इणमब्बवी - ॥ ४७ ॥
देवेन्द्र के इस कथन को सुन, हेतु - कारण से प्रेरित नमि राजर्षि ने उससे कहा- ॥ ४७ ॥
Hearing these words from Indra and stirred by logic and reason sage Nami answered to Indra thus - (47)
सुवण्ण-रुप्पस उ पव्वया भवे, सिया हु केलाससमा असंखया । नरस्स लुद्धस्स न तेहि किंचि, इच्छा उ आगाससमा अणन्तिया ॥ ४८ ॥
कैलाश के समान स्वर्ण और चाँदी के असंख्य पर्वत भी हों, किन्तु उनसे भी लोभी व्यक्ति की बिल्कुल भी तृप्ति नहीं होती क्योंकि इच्छाएँ आकाश के समान अनन्त हैं ॥ ४८ ॥
If there are innumerable mountains of gold and silver, as vast and high as Kailash mountain, even then the greedy person cannot get a bit of contentment because the desires are infinite-as vast as the space. (48)
पुढवी साली जवा चेव, हिरण्णं पसुभिस्सह । पडिपुणं नालमेगस्स, इइ विज्जा तवं चरे ॥ ४९ ॥
समस्त पृथ्वी, चावल, जौ तथा अन्य धान्य, पशु और स्वर्ण- ये सभी एक व्यक्ति की भी इच्छा पूरी नहीं कर सकते - यह जानकर तप का आचरण करे ॥ ४९ ॥
