and unruly (yathachhand) in thought and conduct. They lived as
Shramanists for many years, after which they emaciated their body by 卐 observing the ultimate vow (sanlekhana) for a fortnight missing thirty ॥
meals. In the end at the time of their death they left their body without performing critical review and atonement for their lapses. They have taken rebirth as the Trayastrimshak gods of Chamarendra, the king of Asur-kumar gods.
५. [३] जप्पभिई च णं भंते ! ते कायंदगा तायत्तीसं सहाया गाहावई समणोवासगा चमरस्स असुरिंदस्स असुरकुमाररण्णो तायत्तीसगदेवत्ताए उववण्णा तप्पभिई च णं भंते ! एवं वुच्चइ-'चमरस्स असुरिंदस्स असुरकुमाररण्णो तायत्तीसगा देवा, तायत्तीसगा देवा'?
५. [३] (श्यामहस्ती ने गौतम स्वामी से) भगवन् ! जब से वे काकन्दी निवासी परस्पर म सहायक तैंतीस गृहपति श्रमणोपासक असुरराज चमर के त्रायस्त्रिंश-देव रूप में उत्पन्न हुए हैं, ॐ क्या तभी से ऐसा कहा जाता है कि असुरराज असुरेन्द्र चमर के (ये) तैंतीस देव त्रायस्त्रिंशक के ॐ देव हैं? (अर्थात् क्या इससे पहले उसके त्रायस्त्रिंशक देव नहीं थे?)
5. [3] (Shyamahasti to Gautam Swami) Bhante ! Does it mean that only since those thirty three friendly Shramanist householders were born as Trayastrimshak gods of Chamarendra, the king of Asurkumar gods, it is said that Chamar, the king of gods of Asur-kumar gods has Trayastrimshak gods ? (In other words did he not have them before this ?)
६. तएणं भगवं गोयमे सामहत्थिणा अणगारेणं एवं वुत्ते समाणे संकिए, कंखिए, वितिगिच्छिए उट्ठाए उठेइ, उट्ठाए उट्ठत्ता सामहत्थिणा अणगारेणं सद्धिं जेणेव म समणे भगवं महावीरे तेणेव उवागच्छड्। तेणेव उवागच्छित्ता समणं भगवं महावीरं वंदइ ॐ नमसइ वंदित्ता नमंसित्ता एवं वयासी- .
६. श्यामहस्ती अनगार के द्वारा यह प्रश्न पूछे जाने पर भगवान् गौतम स्वामी शंकित, 卐 कांक्षित एवं विचिकित्सित (अतिसंदेहग्रस्त) हो गए। वे वहाँ से उठे और श्यामहस्ती अनगार
के साथ जहाँ श्रमण भगवान् महावीर स्वामी विराजमान थे, वहाँ आए। श्रमण भगवान् महावीर स्वामी को वन्दना-नमस्कार किया और इस प्रकार पूछा
