[उ.] जयन्ती ! जो जीव अधार्मिक यावत् अधर्म द्वारा आजीविका करते हैं, उन जीवों का आलसीपन अच्छा है। यदि वे आलसी होंगे तो प्राणों, भूतों, जीवों और सत्त्वों को दु:ख, शोक और परिताप उत्पन्न करने में प्रवृत्त नहीं होंगे, इत्यादि सब सुप्त के समान (१८-२ सू. के अनुसार ) कहना चाहिए, तथा दक्षता ( उद्यमीपन) का कथन जाग्रत के समान (१८-२ सू. के अनुसार) कहना चाहिए, यावत् वे (दक्ष जीव) स्व, पर और स्व- पर दोनों को धर्म के साथ संयोजित करने वाले होते हैं। यदि ये जीव दक्ष हों तो आचार्य की वैयावृत्य, उपाध्याय की वैयावृत्य, स्थविरों की वैयावृत्य, तपस्वियों की वैयावृत्य, ग्लान (रुग्ण ) की वैयावृत्य, शैक्ष (नवदीक्षित) की वैयावृत्य, कुलवैयावृत्य, गणवैयावृत्य, संघवैयावृत्य और साधर्मिकवैयावृत्य में अपने आपको संयोजित ( संलग्न) करने वाले होते हैं। इसलिए इन जीवों की दक्षता अच्छी है।
हें जयन्ती ! इसी कारण से ऐसा कहा जाता है, कि कुछ जीवों का दक्षत्व ( उद्यमीपन) अच्छा है और कुछ जीवों का आलसीपन अच्छा है।
20-2. [Q.] Bhante! Why is it said that it is better for some beings to be efficient and for some beings to be sluggish?
[Ans.] Jayanti! It is better for those beings to be sluggish who are irreligious... and so on up to... earn their living only through irreligion because when they are sluggish they do not indulge in causing misery, grief... and so on up to ... pain to many beings (praan), organisms (bhoot), souls (jiva), and entities (sattva) etc. The sluggish should be described like 'asleep' in statement-18.2 and the description about efficient should be like 'awake' in statement- 18.2. and so on up to... engage themselves in numerous religious plans and projects. If they are efficient they engage themselves in service (vaiyavratya) of Acharya (head of the religious organization), service (vaiyavratya) of Upadhyaya (scholarly teacher of scriptures), service of Sthavis (senior ascetics), service of austerity-observing ascetics, service of ailing ascetics, service of neo-initiates among ascetics, service of Kula (members of same ascetic lineage), service of Gana (own group of ascetics), service of Sangh (members of whole religious organization) and service of co-religionists (saadharmik). Therefore it is better that such ( religious) beings remain efficient.
