महावीर को वन्दना नमस्कार किया। तदोपरान्त वे सभी शख श्रमणोपासक के पास आए और ॐ शंख श्रमणोपासक से इस प्रकार कहने लगे-देवानुप्रिय! कल आपने ही हमें इस प्रकार कहा था ,
कि “देवानुप्रियो! तुम विपुल अशनादि भोजन तैयार करवाओ, हम सभी भोजन देते हुए यावत् ॥ उपभोग करते हुए पौषध का अनुपालन करेंगे। परन्तु फिर आप नहीं आए और आपने अकेले है ही पौषधशाला में यावत् निराहार पौषध कर लिया। अतः देवानुप्रिय! आपने हमारी अवहेलना की है।"
23. Listening to the sermon of Shraman Bhagavan Mahavir and understanding it, those shramanopasaks were pleased and contented. They stood up and paid homage to Bhagavan: Having done that the to Shankh shramanopasak and said "Beloved of gods ! Yesterday you
had told us-Beloved of gods! Please arrange for plenty of ashan, paan, ___khadya, svadya (staple food, liquids, general food, and savoury food). We will spend days and nights eating... and so on up to... partial-ascetic vow (Paakshik Paushadh Vrat).' But then you did not come and we observed the vow without you. Therefore, beloved of gods! You have slighted us."
२४. 'अज्जो!' त्ति समणे भगवं महावीरे ते समणोवासए एवं वयासी-मा णं अज्जो! तुब्भे संखं समणोवासयं हीलह, निंदह, खिंसह, गरहह, अवमन्नह। संखे णं समणोवासए पियधम्मे चेव, दढधम्मे चेव, सुदक्खुजागरियं जागरिए।
[२४] (उन श्रमणोपासकों की इस बात को सुनकर) आर्यों! इस प्रकार (सम्बोधित करते हुए) श्रमण भगवान महावीर ने उन श्रमणोपासकों से कहा-"आर्यों ! तुम श्रमणोपासक शंख की म हीलना, निन्दा, खिंसना, कोसना, गर्हा और अवमानना (अपमान) मत करो। क्योंकि शंख श्रमणोपासक ॐ प्रियधर्मा और दृढ़धर्मा है। इसने (प्रमाद और निद्रा का त्याग करके) सुदर्शन (सुरक्षा या सुदृश्या नामक) जागरिका जागृत की है।" ।
24. (At this) “Noble ones !” Addressing thus, Shraman Bhagavan Mahavir said to those shramanopasaks-“Noble ones! You should neither treat him with contempt (heelana), nor reprimand (khimsana), criticize (ninda), curse (kosana), slander (garha) or insult (apamaan) him. This is because Shankh shramanopasak loves religion and is resolute in observance. He has observed the prescribed and proper religious awakening (Sudarshan Jaagarika).
